Paintings with a Twist

Two elderly woman with walkers, entered the museum. They were wearing matching purple hats with orange feathers, purple blouses, purple pants and … Darcy, tried not to laugh, looking at their orange shoes.

Her smile was wide and eyes bright as she greeted them. “Welcome ladies, May I help you?”

“Hi dear, we would like two tickets please. Which way to see the dinosaurs?”‘

“I am afraid we have no dinosaurs, this is an art museum.” Darcy informed them, as she handed them their tickets.

“A heart musuem? Hey Izzy, did you…? Wait up, where are you going so fast? Why did you bring me to a heart museum?”

Laughter bubbled up out of Darcy as she watched the two ladies head towards the restroom. She needed these ladies to come every day and brighten up her day.

The museum had been open for an hour already and they were the first and only customers to come in. Before they came Darcy had been wondering if one really could die of boredom. How was she going to make it through the summer with this job?

Three hours later while she was doodling on her drawing pad, she looked up and saw the two elderly ladies exiting the museum.

They were talking rather loud, and Darcy heard the one complaining about not seeing any dinosaurs.

Darcy shook her head. The most exciting guests from the day, which wasn’t saying much since the grand total of the day had only been 20 guests. The museum was dying and they needed a new exhibit if it was going to have any chance of staying afloat.

All week long Darcy worked on different sketches and ideas. Unfortunately the ideas were piling up in her trashcan. There were times she felt like. “smacking her head.” Then at last an idea struck her and she got busy.

It felt so good to be painting again. Much better than sitting behind a desk. Darcy was ezcited about her new idea and couldn’t wait to show her boss, and owner of the museum, the finished projects.

The museum needed a makeover. People were bored with the same paintings that they had seen over and over again. This was a small town and the museum was the highlight of the town. Well, at one time it had been, but not anymore.

Darcy’s stomach was twisted into knots. She had finished her last painting last night and handed a few of her best ones to her boss this morning. Now she drunmed on the counter anxiously waiting to hear what her boss, Marianne, thought of them.

“Darcy! Darcy, darling! These are masterpieces! Thank you soo much! What do you think we should name the exhibit?”

Darcy was literally beaming, she couldn’t believe her ears. Her break had come! Her art had been accepted!

“I would like to call it “Paintings with a Twist,” Darcy replied.

“Perfect!” Get ready to display them next week.”

The paintings had been displayed for three months now and people kept coming! The parking lot was full, once again.

Darcy was still in awe of what had happened. She stared at her paintings and smiled for the hundredth time. All she did was give a liitle twist to history. Now one knew why the Mona Lisa smiled and what the Royal Queen Cat looked like.
