The gift of sight!

I am off the eye doctor this afternoon for a routine check up. The only thing I really don’t like about the eye doctor is when they dilate your eyes! No, it doesn’t hurt, but my eyes are real sensitive to it and I can’t see right for around 8 hours!! So you won’t see me on the computer this afternoon or evening. Maybe i will be at 3 in the morning, LOL!

I complain about the dilation BUT I am thankful that I have a good Doctor to go to. Thankful that they can help keep my eyes healthy, for you only get 1 set of eyes and I highly value mine! I cannot imagine not being able to see. To not see the beautiful smiles of my girls, and the twinkle in my husband’s eyes. To not see the beauty of the pure white snow and the wonderful budding of trees in the Spring and the blooming of flowers. The chirping birds in the tree and my loyal dogs. I could make this post my longest post by writing everything down that I LOVE to see. I feel so badly for the ones that don’t have the gift of sight, and yes it is a gift. A gift that is easy to take for granted. You kinda just assume you will always have it.

3 years ago I had to get cataract surgery, my night vision was starting to be really affected to where I did not trust myself to drive at night. I saw those mega halos on the lights and the world was just so dark, that I could hardly see the lines on the road. Yes, I was young to have a cataract. I had the rare, fast moving kind. If you would know about my medical history, the word rare has been used a lot more than once! LOL!

I was scared to have the surgery tho I did want my night vision improved. But the thought of them messing with my eye I did not like. I was like one wrong slip with the laser and OOPS, didn’t mean to cut there! A little too late! Glad to say the surgery went perfectly and to anyone who is worried about having the surgery done, Go for it! You will be so happy you did. I remember the first night I drove and I was like WOW, they turned the lights back on, was so much brighter and the halos were no longer.

Now there is another cataract in my other eye, which wasn’t moving as fast, but eventually I will probably have to get it done. So my night vision isn’t perfect, but a lot better! I don’t want to get my left eye done, not because I am scared, but because I am enjoying something rare again that happened with the surgery. I used to be far sighted. I wore glasses til I was 13 and then I only needed them for reading and close up work, like the computer. Now I am far sighted still in my left eye but my right eye that had the surgery is near sighted. So I no longer need glasses to read or for the computer 🙂 It is AWESOME! Yes I cant’ read signs at a distance as easily anymore, but I will handle that in trade for not having to wear glasses. So I am thinking if I have to get the cataract out of my left eye that may make that eye near sighted and then I would be in trouble. We will see what the Dr says, and I will remember that if I need glasses again in the future, its a small price to pay for having the gift of sight! GO ENJOY the WORLD today! Try to see how many things you can spot and take appreciation in and be thankful that you can see!Koala

  1. I can relate, sort of. I’ve been going to the optometrist since I was 3 years old. I’ve been near-sighted since I was 6. Because I have depended on glasses or contacts to see for almost my entire life, I have a pretty good fear of anything that could threaten my eye sight. You did a beautiful job of sharing all the wonderful reasons for wanting to see. 🙂

  2. I think it’s valuable and necessary to see as well. I hope your one eye with cataract is okay. I am very near sighted and will always be grateful for contacts that allow my bad eyes to see all the way around. Thanks for sharing all the good reasons we have to see.

    • Thanks for your well wishes! Hope your vision stays well. I was thinking of contacts when I was 13, but then when found out just needed my glasses to read I decided just to stay with the glasses. Now I am so used to being without them that it would be hard to go back, but I don’t think I could manage contacts. My eye hand coordination has much to be desired, LOL! I would be dropping them down the sink!

  3. I just made an appointment yesterday with my eye doctor. I am hoping the cataract on my left eye is now ready to be removed. My eyesight is terrible! (I had it done on my right eye about 3 years ago. lol) I need to new glasses and as expensive as mine are I am trying to hold off until I get the surgery.

    • Hoping the best for you and your cataract. You will feel like a new person when it is removed! 🙂 Do you remember all the cool bright colors when you got your cataract removed ? Like a light show, LOL! 🙂

  4. I am getting cataracts too, and would be happy just to have thinner glasses because I am very nearsighted! But, I was advised to wait because the lens implants that are available now might not improve my night vision, and the surgery would be more risky than for the average person. So, better to just look into it again in five years or so, if my eyesight doesn’t get much worse before then.

Can’t complain though… medical science is much better than it used to be!

  5. Hope your eyesight can stay good enough to wait 5 years. Don’t want to do a risky surgery if you don’t need to.
You are right, medical science has come a long way! We are blessed, for I think of how there are so many people out there that can’t be blessed by glasses or contacts or surgeries to take care of their eyes.

  6. I’ve been glasses for years with no hope of improvement 😀 turns out, instead of getting better, it keeps getting worse, so glasses it is till eternity. I do hope you wouldn’t need another surgery again 🙂

    • Sorry about your eyes getting worse, do they know why? I just read your other comment on my post from last night and you said how you never had your eyes dilated. So how is it that you have had glasses so long, but no dilation? Do Eye Dr.s not dilate out there?? Are you far sighted or near sighted?

      • All they do is the “refraction” test. I actually am near-sighted and have astigmatism in one eye. But other than that there is no pain or any underlying condition thankfully. The doctor said the reason my sight kept getting worse was because i was still growing. And eventually, when growth stops it won’t get anymore worse.
