Riding the Waves

Mind bending painting by Robert Gonsalves on Pinterest

What had he been thinking? He had been sailing on the sea for 3 days now and had spent most of his time leaning over the railing, while turning green.

Ooooh the big waves came again, and with them another wave of nausea. Jeremy bent over the railing just in time.

Floyd came by and patted him on the back. “Not feeling too good eh?”

Jeremy groaned and shook his head, not trusting himself to speak. He gripped the railing, hoping the breeze would help refresh him and bring some relief to his misery.

“Don’t worry fella, this happens to all the newbies, you will make it! By the way, we are having liver and onions for lunch, sound good?” Floyd didn’t wait for a response, he walked away laughing as Jeremy grimaced.

The adventure had sounded so exciting. A 15 day deep sea adventure. They were going to dive and explore the hidden parts of the sea, who knew what wonderful things he may see. He didn’t think twice about signing up. He had always wanted to scuba dive, sounded so cool. He never took into account though that he had never been on a ship before!

He closed his eyes as he fought another wave of nausea. Earlier, Jeremy had been lying below deck in his cabin, but it got so stuffy in there that he thought he could use some fresh air. Maybe he should go back to the cabin and lie down, for he was starting to feel dizzy.

Staring out at the never ending sea he squinted his eyes, was that another ship he saw, and maybe 2, or 5 or … wait no just one. Oh he must be losing it, he couldn’t even count anymore. Jeremy closed his eyes. Then he opened them and looked again. Yes there was 1 ship and wait, was that a bridge? A bridge in the middle of the sea? He shook his head, trying to clear his mind and looked again, yup, sure enough there was a bridge in the middle of the deep blue sea.

Robert was mopping the deck, as Jeremy was slowly walking across it to head downstairs to his cabin.

“Oh Jeremy you really don’t look too good, where are you headed?”

“Back to my cabin to lie down.”

“Good idea! I am guessing you don’t want anyone to wake you up for lunch in a half hour? Liver and onions with beets. Hey ….. be careful the deck is wet, you may … !

Poor Jeremy’s legs slipped out from under him and he fell smack onto the floor! This day just kept getting better.

Later that night, he woke up and for the first time his stomach finally wasn’t turning. Perhaps the worst was over and from here on out it would be smooth sailing! He got up and opened his door. A strong odor assaulted his senses. What was that? He looked down to see that a tray of liver and onions with beets had been placed beside his door. Just then the boat rocked, almost knocking him off his feet.

He grimaced. Oh No! Not again, he thought, as he bent over holding his stomach, and ran back to his bed. Next time he was going on a safari adventure, he was not cut out for the sea!

The Golden Arrow

Little Caleb was hard at work. He was drawing his boat that was out on the sea. He wanted to make sure to get every detail just right. Caleb always liked Thursdays when he could stay after school, drawing  on the chalkboard, letting his imagination flow.

The Golden Arrow was making its very first voyage. Caleb had made sure to have all the provisions that he would need for the journey. He had 5 bananas and 5 Golden Delicious  apples, for Mommy always said that fruit was good for him. A box of chocolate chip cookies, because they were his favorite and 2 boxes of Teddy Grahams. He couldn’t forget his gummy worms either. He had 3 boxes of them. Peanut butter and jelly was his favorite type of sandwich, so he made sure to pack 6 of them. Nothing like Skippy crunchy peanut butter and grape jam. He also brought along a pack of 10 juice boxes, 5 packs of red fruit punch and 5 packs of red grape juice.

Caleb loved his ship. It was a fiery red color with 2 golden yellow arrows painted on each side of the ship. In case of anything breaking on the ship or the ship springing a leak, he had brought along a roll of duck tape. Daddy had always said that Duck tape fixed everything.

Yes, Caleb was all set. He was heading West to see new sights and discover new lands. Oh No! A storm was must be brewing, the waves were getting higher and he felt his boat shaking.

“Caleb honey… its time to wake up, your Daddy is here. That’s a great picture that you drew.”

Caleb was lying on the floor, with the chalk still in his hand. He opened his eyes to see Miss.Marjorie smiling at him with her hand on his shoulder.  He rubbed his eyes as he looked at his teacher. “I was sailing on the wild sea Miss. Marjorie, I really was. Do you want to hear my dream, but first do you have any chocolate chip cookies?”  Caleb took Miss. Marjorie’s hand and continued chatting as they walked out of the schoolroom.

“The Lucky Eagle”

They stood on the island looking at their boat, or more like the remains of what was left of their boat. None of them said a word, as they just stared out into the crystal blue sea.

The 3 of them had been given a brief vacation after the busyness of the Christmas season. Jinx and Jangle had thought it would be nice to bring Snowball along. He was the newest elf to join the team.

One day when they were talking Snowball had shared about his years of sailing a boat, and that gave Jinx and Jangle the idea to go on a boat excursion. They had asked Santa and he found a boat for them to use. Then they surprised Snowball with it. He was very much surprised when they said how they were going to take a little trip with it and he could be the Captain!

He was quiet for a few moments which led Jinx and Jangle to ask if everything was okay.

“Oh yes, yes, it is umm..fine! This should be quite the exciting adventure!” he replied. Jinx and Jangle agreed, as they patted him on the back, “Aye Captain!” they joked.

The next few days they gathered supplies to cover them for about a 3 day trip. On the day that they took off, Santa and the other elves gathered round to watch them sail off.

Everyone was clapping Snowball on the shoulder and he began to feel very proud. This really may turn out to be a grand adventure he thought as he smiled back at the other elves. Confidence rose up in him, he had faith that he could do this, surely he could!

They had only been sailing for a day  when the accident happened.  The accident that left them staring at the broken remains of  their ship which they had named, “The Lucky Eagle!”  The Eagle that was supposed to have smoothly glided over the crystal blue sea.

At this time it was just Jinx and Snowball looking at the wreckage. Jangle had decided to explore the boat to see what things he may be able to rescue from it. You never knew what you may miss if you weren’t sure to look in every nook and cranny. Jangle was always one for being very detailed. Not much could escape his eye. Jinx was the same way, but at this time he just was still in shock about the boat.

Finally he broke the silence and turned to Snowball and said, “I am curious, how many years of boating experience did you say that you had?”

“5 years.”  Snowball replied.

“Well I would say that is a good amount, what kind of boat did you sail?”

At this, Snowball hung his head, looking at his feet for a little … then he replied in a soft voice, “My toy sailboat.”

“WHAT!!!!” Jinx shouted as he stared at Snowball, whose face was turning red.

“Yeah, you see there was this creek behind….” Snowball started to explain, until Jinx cut him off.

“Please don’t tell me that sailing your toy boat is the only sailing experience you ever had!!” Jinx said.

There was silence as Snowball looked at the ground.

“Well, I am waiting…”

“Waiting for what, you told me not to tell you! I am going to go see if Jangle could use another pair of eyes to help him.” stammered Snowball, as he ran towards the boat.

Meanwhile Jinx remained speechless and frozen in place, with his mouth hanging open.

Had Santa known that Snowball only ever operated a toy sailboat? Jinx highly doubted it! But it was a little late to wonder about that now.

Later that day they were cooking over a fire. They had managed to save the matches from the boat and were able to find some wood on the island. By this time Jinx had calmed down, after all, they were all  in the same boat now. All stranded on an island. It didn’t do any good to be mad.

While they were cooking their food, Jangle spoke up. “Do you think this island has wild animals on it?”

“I wouldn’t worry about that. The bigger problem is how do we get off this island?”said Jinx.

Meanwhile Snowball was staring off into the distance, not finishing the food that he was holding in his hand.

“Umm…Jinx about the wild animals…”

“I told you guys not to worry about that!  Why should we worry about crazy, wild animals. You all are getting yourselves scared over nothing!”

“B…but…” cried Jangle

ROAR!!!!

Jinx JUMPED,   dropping the food that he held in his hands. He looked behind him and found himself looking into the eyes of the strangest animal that he had ever seen!
