In honor of….

Sometimes the day just gets away from you, and that is what happened today. I intended to write a post, but.. Life has a way of interrupting our plans!

By 8pm I had decided that there would be no post and I relaxed with my hubby on the couch for a little bit. Later I was finishing up laundry, because we all know that laundry never ends. I sat down again to relax for a moment and I saw in my email that a new post was posted.  I read it and my plan changed, I did have a post for today.

I hate war and I really don’t know anyone that likes it, but the fact is that it has happened and continues too.  The fact is that there are young men and women who bravely face the battlefield, making big sacrifices to do it. Young men and women like you and me who are doing what they feel called to do. Who face unimaginable horrors!

In honor of Veterans Day, I want to share a link to a touching poem on Colin’s blog. Please take a moment to read it.

Don’t take for granted the freedoms that we have. There were sacrifices made for them!

Sunflower Smiles

Rows and Rows of Sunflowers, bringing smiles to all who see.

When we were at the Sunflower fields last weekend we saw this Monarch flying around, looking so pretty as it flew from flower to flower.  I wasn’t able to capture it being still, but my husband managed a shot. On Monday Colin posted his poem “A Monarch Butterfly” on his blog which made me think of Sunday, at the Sunflower fields. I would like to share the poem here. If you are drawn to it, like I was, I would highly recommend his book of poetry, “Just Thinking”, a collection of poetry from the heart, that moves the heart.

“A Monarch Butterfly”

 You flew into my life.

Delicate;

Eye catching:

Unannounced.

Your coat of many colours,

Gracefully swirled,

As you moved

In some mystical dance.

***

I was in awe.

Such beauty;

A Princess…

Right in front of me.

Colours flashed

As you turned around.

A sight indeed to behold

And… all could surely see.

***

But I was puzzled.

While I could see you

Oh so very clear,

To others it would not appear so.

They clearly saw me,

But passed on by,

And they seemed perturbed.

Didn’t they know?

***

“Why me?” I asked.

“Why me at this time?

The mysteries of life

Are long gone.

Why would you visit me

Oh fragile princess?

Why am I

Your chosen one?

***

I reached out to touch,

But you rustled your wings

And gently moved away.

What did I do?

Were you despairing

Of my clumsiness?

Should I even touch

A delicate being like you?

***

What was your purpose?

The silence was confusing to me.

Your being was a mystery

I did not understand,

But then you moved closer.

You reached out to me

And, for a moment,

You touched my hand.

***

You told me that I dream.

But to what ends?

They’re always elusive,

As you seemed to know.

Then you moved again.

Were you going to leave?

I had so many questions

Before you go.

***

But that was the moment

I shall never forget.

The warmth,

Enveloped in a shroud

Of harmony, of oneness.

I was at total peace,

As together we moved upwards.

Upwards and into the clouds.

***

Dreams would soon be realized.

I just knew this was to be

As we travelled through the air.

Just us two.

The sky became brighter.

My soul was now free.

My questions all gone.

The answers were… all along, you.

For the Love of Animals

I have been around dogs since I been little. A love of animals was instilled in my heart, especially for dogs.

Having a soft heart for dogs is the reason behind this post today. Today my heart is with  a dog named Ray. He is the star of Colin’s blog. Over the years through Colin’s tales of him and his pictures, many have fallen in love with Ray. Those big brown eyes of his just melt your heart and you are under his spell!

Sadly Ray is having some health issues right now and will be undergoing surgery tomorrow to remove a malignant tumor.

A poem that Colin had written came to my mind today as I was thinking about Ray.  The poem is from his “Just Thinking”  book. A collection of  heart felt poetry about different situations in life, that you can easily find yourself identifying with. Being that Ray takes up such a large part of Colin’s heart, its no wonder that Colin included in his book some poetry dedicated to him.

Enjoy the following poem where you can get to know Ray a little, and his history if you aren’t already acquainted with the “Handsome star!”

Go on a walk with your pet, or give them a hug, or belly rub, or whatever they prefer. Cats may not want to go on a walk with you. Pets play a very special role in our lives, and I am so grateful that God made animals of all kinds!

As you are enjoying your pet or just feeling thankful for animals in general, send your thoughts and prayers Ray’s way for his surgery tomorrow please. There are are lot more trails for him to walk, scents to sniff, water to splash in and TimBit treats for him to eat!

                                                                  “A Stray Named Ray”

They were found on a farm

Not too far away,

But… where was their home?

Two dogs, frightened, hungry,

So very tired and,

Surviving somehow on their own.

***

The rescue van arrived,

And the crew discussed

How best to capture this pair.

Traps were determined

To be the most humane,

But… so many questions were there.

***

Why were these two dogs

Having to scavenge for food?

Why were they out on their own?

The treats in the traps,

Put an end to all that,

And they were captured, scared… and alone.

***

They had no collars; no tags;

No microchips were found.

They were just two dogs without names.

Their faces were expressionless,

And their fur in poor condition.

Were they siblings? Perhaps their mother was the same?

***

Once back at the shelter

They were caged together,

But then a fight ensued.

Trainers intervened,

And gave them separate cages,

But then had to decide what to do.

***

One (they later named Ray) was not unfriendly,

Although cautious and rather aloof.

He seemed to know he was no longer alone.

He was given a bath and a bowl of food

And, with some loving care (they thought),

He could possibly adapt to a home.

***

He was a sorry sight,

And no doubt a once proud dog.

Clearly a German Shepherd cross,

Just managing to survive,

By eating scraps to stay alive.

To explain him, they were quite at a loss.

***

They tried to find his owners.

They checked the Missing Pets files,

But there only seemed one option.

He now belonged to the shelter

And… as he was neither reported lost, nor stolen,

He would be trained for adoption.

***

Four months later he was ready.

His adoption photo was published,

And all were looking for a sign.

He needed a family,

To love… and be loved by.

This will, hopefully, be his time.

***

Eventually a couple arrived

Who clearly were drawn to him,

And regular walks were arranged.

It was soon to be seen

That his life, as it had been,

Was quickly going to change.

***

His day of adoption came.

The staff all said their farewells.

Smiles, and tears, were all around,

For the life of a stray;

Of a dog they named Ray;

A life almost lost… had been found.

I couldn’t resist also sharing the first stanza from another  poem about Ray.

“A Man, a Dog, and the Sky”

                                                                 Laying on the grass

                                                              On a summer afternoon,

And watching clouds caress the blue sky.

Listening to the birds, as they sing their songs,

But I’m thinking of  …. just you and I.

Friday’s Super Short Stories!

When you back out of your parking space VERY SLOWLY, due to being a little too close to the shiny, black sports car beside you. Afraid of the magnetic pull once again!

Poetry expresses through words, the dance of your heart, anywhere from a happy jig to a tender waltz and all of the emotions in between!

Flowers are emerging from  hibernation,  bringing  beauty to the eyes, and the ocean is starting to call,  bringing one of the most beautiful sounds to my ear!

Let Us Run…

Today I want to share a post that I posted back in 2017, I don’t think I have posted it since then.  I hope my followers who have been with me for a while now don’t mind seeing it again and I hope my new followers since then can be touched by it. Perhaps there is someone out there whose heart needs these words today.

This poem came to my mind yesterday when I was reading another blog post about how we can get caught up with emotion when writing emotional pieces. How those emotions can help us write better as we let them bleed out on the paper.

I don’t consider myself a poet by any means, but this poem that I am going to share came out of a time when my heart was full of deep emotion.

My heart poured it out on a night when it was breaking. Breaking because the prognosis was not looking good for a good friend of ours, cancer was going to win.  The tears fell as I didn’t know what to say. What could I speak  to my very precious friend;  his wife. How could I encourage her? I felt that I had no words.

Come Away With Me My Friend (Let Us Run To The Ocean)

Come away with me my friend

***

Let us run to the ocean,

Where you can let the pain in your heart

Be overpowered by the roar of the waves.

Let us go where you can shout ”Why?” to the sky,

And scream as loud as you need.

Where you can fall to your knees on the soft sand.

***

Let us run to the ocean,

Where I can hold you tight, and let you cry.

Where you can let your shoulders sag.

Where you can let your tears fall,

To be carried away by the waves.

Lean on me. Let me be your strength.

***

Let us run to the ocean.

Oh, my dear friend… let us just go!

You need not think about the future.

Let us walk along the water’s edge.

Remember when we were young?

Our lives were so carefree

***

Let us stand in the water.

Let the waves splash your face,

And gently wash away your tears.

Let us run to the ocean.

Let us go where the waves go on forever.

Life can be hard my very special friend.

***

But let us run to the ocean.

Life we cannot always understand.

Things happen that cannot be explained.

But the waves will go on forever

Through night and day; Through rain or shine,

As will my love for you.

***

Let us go to the ocean my dear friend.

We will face the rolling waves together,

And if you slip… I will be there to catch you.

If you feel you are losing your way…

I will be there to guide you.

***

Let us talk in silence,

For our love does not need words.

We have a special friendship.

Let us run to the ocean.

Let the waves mesmerize you.

Let the ocean’s rhythm soothe your soul.

***

Let us go to the ocean, my friend.

Go where no words are needed.

Where we will let the waves speak.

Let us go the ocean my friend.

Let us go… and be as one,

For I will never let you fight this on your own.

***

Come away with me my friend.

If you enjoyed this poem, you can find it in Colin’s book of poetry , “Just Thinking.” The book is available through  Amazon, Friesen Press, and all other online book retailers. He helped me fine tune this poem into what it is and I was very touched when he asked me if he could include it in his book. Your heart will be touched by his poems as well, as he simply speaks from his heart.

Home Sweet Home!

We are back from vacation! We are tired from the long drive but we are happy. Happy to be in our own home. Don’t get me wrong, we had a good time visiting family, but ti just hit me as I was walking around the house putting stuff away at how good it feels when you come home.

You can flop on the couch and just stare at the wall if you want, you can walk around the house with one sock on and one sock off if you so desire or bundle up in your robe, even though its still early. The point is that its your house, your home and you can feel comfortable doing whatever you want to do. There’s a special warmth and coziness in being home, no matter what wonderful places you may go visit, its always nice to come back home!

As I was soaking in the feeling of being home, it struck me how sadly not everyone can experience the warm, cozy feeling of “being home.”  For many people, home is a park bench, under a bridge or on a street corner. I ache at that and it reminded me how not to take my home for granted. Not to take my family for granted. I just can’t imagine how it would feel to be all alone in this big world and so I say a prayer of Thanks and I pray for those out there who don’t have a home and for my heart to always have compassion to help them.

We all desire to belong, to have somewhere where we can go and everyone knows our name and they are glad we came. Perhaps its being tired from the the long road trip, but somehow the theme song from the old Tv show “Cheers” is running through my mind. Some people just want to go where someone knows their name.

Colin, a friend and wonderful writer, wrote a powerful poem about the ones who have no home.  Here is a link to his post, https://meandray.com/2018/06/13/the-project/  and if you are someone who likes moving, thought provoking, easy to understand poetry I highly recommend his book, “Just Thinking”, it will touch your heart!

Surviving the Waves

dd96de27d6037d0b768dc54434cb8e25

Life knocked her down and she stood up only to get knocked down again. It was brutal. The darkness refused to give up, but what the darkness didn’t know is the strength of the one it was dealing with.

The darkness didn’t know how strong and amazing my dear friend was and is still.

Yes, her heart may be heavy and her face has had tears roll down it more times than it can count, but those tears aren’t a sign of weakness. Oh no, those tears are a sign of how precious life is.  A sign of the powerful emotions of love and how hard it is to let go! A sign of being real with yourself and knowing that through the tears you can heal.

It’s horrible, the struggle is real. The pain in your heart hurts like hell, so why shouldn’t the tears flow!

Yes, there is darkness, but the light can also shine through and I have watched my dear friend stumble in the darkness and at times fall, but I also have watched her dance. I been there as she has danced in the waves with a beautiful smile on her face.

I love you Sherry and though this has been a year of more pain than you have ever known you haven’t given up. You have made it through and I have every confidence that you will continue too. And you can believe that I will continue to walk through this journey with you.

Come, Let us Run to the Ocean My Friend!

(The following poem was written a year ago for my dear friend Sherry when she lost her husband. I am NOT a poet, but this poem poured out of my  broken heart. Thanks to Colin ( who is a poet) for his “magical touch” in helping to smooth it out.)

Wings of Peace

d2f3aeb427c00eab9063712e9305ac83 From Pinterest, artist unknown

She was sitting by the lake gazing into the water.  She saw her reflection and her sad eyes staring back at her.   When would things be different?  Would they ever be?  She loved coming to this lake and shutting out the noise of the world.  The noise of hate and prejudice.  When would the sound of love finally drown out all those other noises?

Hearing a sound, she looked up.  She saw 2 beautiful white doves soaring together up into the sky.  She smiled at the lovely sight and her heart warmed.  It warmed as she listened to the soothing sound of the running water from the small waterfall nearby.

Nature was so peaceful.  There was so much we could learn from it, if we only would take the time to listen.

In honor of MLK today I wanted to post the picture above. My heart was drawn to it when I saw it. I would love to have it framed and on my wall. Filled me with tranquility.

I also couldn’t help but think of Colin’s poem, “My Dream”.   He is kindly letting me share it on my blog.  It is from his “Just Thinking” book of poetry, which is a collection of moving poetry written from his heart.  You can follow the links below his poem if you care to purchase a copy.  The perfect book to warm your heart on a cold winter’s evening!

My Dream

(Copyright Colin Chappell 2016)

I dream of a day

When we’ll all be friends.

I dream, as I look at the stars,

That the world will see

Being valued and free

Is far better… than destruction and war.

***

I dream of a day

When my friends are yours.

Although from quite different lands.

That you understand

All colors and beliefs

Are able to live in peace. Can hold hands.

***

I dream of a day,

Hopefully not far away,

When compassion wins in the end.

We’re all human after all.

We all stumble and fall

So let’s help each other up… and be friends.

***

I dream of a day

When the killing has stopped,

And peace prevails at last.

Borders are open.

Old vendettas are forgotten.

Past beliefs… will stay in the past.

***

I dream of a day…

But it is only a dream,

So many people will say.

Perhaps I am delusional?

Perhaps I am just a dreamer,

But to survive, we must find a way.

***

To break down barriers,

And to live together in peace.

It will be a challenge for some,

But why must we label

Our different neighbors?

Why can’t we become as one?

***

We all want respect.

We all want freedom.

Let’s open our eyes and see,

That we really do all want the same.

It’s really not complicated.

It’s peace… for you… and for me!

***

I dream of a day

When world peace is achieved,

And when the pen is the only weapon.

There will be universal love

And… to the power above I’ll say

“Thank you. Our Earth has now become Heaven.”

Messages of Love….Part 3

Here is a link to Part 2….Messages of Love…Part 2

Madeline was tired, it had been a long ride home from the beach.

She decided to make it a early night tonight, but thought she would read a little bit before bed.  Often she would read until her eyes couldn’t stay open any longer.  She had been reading a book of poetry that she had recently bought.

Madeline enjoyed poetry and had been led to this book by its beautiful cover.  It was so peaceful to see the reflection of the shining moon in the lake.   Right now she was grateful for anything in her life that brought her a peaceful feeling.  It didn’t take long for her eyelids to start feeling heavy.  She laid the book down on the nightstand by her bed and turned off the lamp.  Another night, alone in the dark.

A tear trickled down her cheek again as she automatically reached out to lay her leg on top of Drew’s. There was nothing there.  Only cold empty space, no warm body to cuddle against.  She couldn’t pull his arm around her and snuggle in against his warm chest, feeling protected and safe.  She sighed, she wouldn’t cry this time, but she fell sleep with a prayer on her lips.  A prayer that Drew  would find his way back to her again.  That he wouldn’t keep using work as an escape.  They needed to walk hand in hand through this difficult journey, not alone!

Drew was reading on the couch in his motel suite.  He never had really been into poetry, but Madeline kept telling him how poetry could speak to your heart, so he thought he would give it a try.   He needed something that would speak to him.  Not knowing any specific titles to look for, he had  browsed through the Poetry books online.  One book stood out to him, it was called. “Just Thinking”.  He was captivated by the picture on the cover and so he bought it.

He had seen the picture of the shining moon and thought of Connor’s favorite book , “Goodnight Moon”.  They would read it every night as Connor’s bedtime story.  Connor would allow Drew to read other books as well, but he always had to end with the  “Goodnight Moon” book.  When Drew saw that moon shining down on the shimmering lake it made him feel closer to Connor.

The poems inside were heartfelt and drew him in. It was like the author was putting some of Drew’s emotions into words.  His broken emotions.  The ones that he had trouble putting into words himself.  Drew knew what he had to do.  He made his decision, called his boss and packed his bags,  before he could change his mind.

Drew was out early on the beach the next morning, he wanted to see the sunrise.  Nothing so beautiful as watching the sun rising over the ocean.  The start of a new day.  He sat on his beach chair and gazed at the beauty, taking time to breathe.

He felt the weight of his awful sadness begin to lift, as he listened to the waves and watched the sun gradually grow brighter.  He felt strength begin to build in him. Yes, it would be a long journey through this dark tunnel that he and Madeline were walking through right now, but they needed to walk through it together.  He continued to stare as he let the roar of the waves speak to his soul.   Sometimes there were no words, you just had to let the waves speak.

The doorbell rang making Madeline jump.   It was 10pm at night, who would be at the door now?   Fear struck through her at first, but she felt led to to go check who it was.  She turned on her porch light and looked out the window.  Gasping when she saw who it was and she fumbled as she tried to unlock the door.

They stared into each other’s eyes. They saw pain, but they also saw love and within minutes they were in each others arms.  Drew started to apologize for not standing up to his boss right away,  for leaving as an escape.  Madeline took her hand and put her fingers on his lips telling him to be quiet.

“ You are here now,  you are holding me now, that’s what counts, yesterday is gone!   Tonight you are here, back where you belong.”  She took his face into her hands and their tears mingled as they kissed under the twinkling of the stars and as they let love speak.
