I was going through my books yesterday, getting a lot together to donate. My bookshelf has been overflowing for a long time! Being an avid reader is wonderful, but I really don’t need to keep every book that I read.
While going through books I came across the series that I had read to my youngest when he was little. “The Seekers”, it was about a family of bears, no Goldilocks! I paused in reflection of the precious nighttime hours that we spent cuddled on the bed together. Then I found a story that my oldest had written about pets when she was little. I came across old pictures of my children when they were little, that had been tucked into books. I had to pause in what I was doing as I sat and remembered the yesterdays!
While continuing to go through my books today, I was still reflecting on memories of the past. I thought of this song by ABBA, an amazing group. My daughter and I have listened to this song many times. The words touch my heart as I watch my children becoming adults right before my eyes! Cherish the moments, for they do slip through your fingers! Cherish the moments today, to place into your treasure chest of the memories of yesterdays!
Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile
I watch her go with a surge of that well-known sadness
And I have to sit down for a while
[Pre-Chorus]
The feeling that I’m losing her forever
And without really entering her world
I’m glad whenever I can share her laughter
That funny little girl
[Chorus]
Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
The feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see what’s in her mind?
Each time I think I’m close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time
[Verse 2]
Sleep in our eyes, her and me at the breakfast table
Barely awake, I let precious time go by
Then when she’s gone, there’s that odd melancholy feeling
And a sense of guilt I can’t deny
[Pre-Chorus]
What happened to the wonderful adventures
The places I had planned for us to go?
(Slipping through my fingers all the time)
Well, some of that we did, but most we didn’t
And why, I just don’t know
[Chorus]
Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
The feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see what’s in her mind?
Each time I think I’m close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time
[Bridge]
Sometimes I wish that I could freeze the picture
And save it from the funny tricks of time
Slipping through my fingers
[Interlude]
[Outro]
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile
It’s nice to know you’re one of those who gives up your old books. My mother has kept most of her books. Helping her move will give a person a hernia.
I like ABBA’s music. But I find no reason for anyone to turn their tunes into a movie.

If I had saved all my books there would be no room for anything else in our basement!
Plus why shouldn’t someone else get pleasure from my books.
Oooh you don’t know how tempted I was to post the movie version of the song as well!

I had a stepfather who put a burn barrel in their backyard. When my mom wasn’t paying attention he’d take some of her books to the burn barrel and offer them to the gods.

Oh No! You can’t burn books! Reminds me of the book burnings they had long ago. The movie “The Book Thief” is about that happening back in the days of Hitler and about a young girl taking books to give to the Jews that they were hiding in their home. A powerful movie…..and there is no singing. 🙂

I understand why. They were planning on moving, and he was trying to save himself from a hernia or slipped disc.
Maybe one day I’ll watch that movie. As long as ABBA didn’t record the soundtrack, it seems safe to watch.

Did your Mom notice they were gone? Or did she have so many that she didn’t notice some missing?
“Haha!” Some people are hopeless!

She never missed them. But shortly after, my stepfather was killed in a car accident. Years after that I told my mother about it, and she got very upset. But what could she do? She couldn’t kill her late husband, as he was already long dead. But she might have prayed that he be sent to some sort of library hell.

Oh gosh! Yes kind of hard to kill someone already dead, that is true!
My husband doesn’t touch my books and I don’t touch his CD’s. LOL!
He has wayyyy more CD’s than I have books but CD’s take up a lot less room!

you’re welcome. Just seen Meryl Streep’s version from Mamma Mia too (sob, loved the film apart from Pierce Brosnan’s singing!)

Oh Di you made me SMILE! I agree about Pierce Brosnan, but Meryl Streep did a good job, didn’t she and it was a great movie! 🙂

Hurrah! success at my daily aim Carolyn, to make at least one person smile every day!
Yes, she was excellent and I enjoyed the film, though we don’t have our copy now as it was one of hundreds given to charity when we bought the boat as we had nowhere to store them all so just kept our favourites.

My daughter and I have watched it numerous times! Did you see Mama Mia 2 as well?

😛 They usually do make sequels to movies that are HITS! 🙂

That’s okay. It keeps the theater less crowded for the good movies, when everyone’s watching the crap.

What memories this post stirred. I don’t recall much when I was around seven or eight years old, but I remember my mother, reading us one chapter a night from The Wizard of Oz. That, was an innocent time in the mid 60s.

I love going through the things we’ve saved from when our kids were old. And what a beautiful song – my eyes were getting watery while reading the words…

Going down memory lane can be a wonderful thing at times!
The waterworks turn on easy for you too I see. First with the “I”ll love you forever” book and now this. If the song made you teary eyed, the movie may too. 🙂
Rrally glad you liked the song.
“ABBA” has great music!

Ssh! Don’t say that too loud, a certain Tippy may hear you! I kind of was outnumbered on his blog when the debate of that movie came up! You didn’t help, here I had a glimmer of hope for a sentimental guy like you! LOL!

I will admit that his singing did have much to be desired, though it did kind of grow on me, during the movie.

Ohhh, how I loved the times when my kids were small and I read to them every night. And they always begged, “one more book, mom, please!?” One summer on vacation we drove for 8 hours to visit grandparents, and while my husband drove, I read CS Lewis’ The Witch, the Lion and the Wardrobe out loud to us all. No one in the car wanted us to reach our destination – even the driver! 🙂
