A Parent’s Love

I have been thinking alot about my parents today for in a months time both my parents have turned 80!! My Dad, on Oct 17th and my Mom today. How did they get to be that age, for I am not aging! 🙂

It just has really hit me how when you are little you think your parents are so cool. You become a teen and think they are ancient and then grow older and become friends with them and then you find yourself saying, time slow down!

I have been blessed with wonderful parents! They will be the first to say they weren’t perfect, but now that I have been a parent I know that there is no such thing as a perfect parent. It is by far the hardest job on earth!! They may not have been perfect but they are the perfect parents for imperfect me!

I know some, actually too many, people sadly have had to grow up feeling unloved by their parents. My heart breaks for them and I am very sorry if that describes your relationship with your parents. I hope that no matter how they may have made you feel that you have learned how special you are!

I think of my children and what I hope they remember! Good memories that were created and most of all I hope they understood how much they have always been loved!

I came across this video and I thought it was a poignant reminder about a parents love.

Happy Birthday Mom! I LOVE YOU! Thanks for everything!

  1. We are all flawed as human beings and, as parents, we do the best we can with what we know. What we know tends to be based from our upbringing (during which our parents did the best they could with what they knew) plus anything else we learned on our life journey. It is ironic that raising the future of our species, which is probably the biggest responsibility we will ever have, has no prior training and no expectation to pass any test beforehand. Nice video! 🙂

    • I have thought the same thing about the irony! We practice for a drivers license, train for a new job, but we are just given our babies and sent home!
When our first baby was screaming for 6 hours straight with colic I thought Oh No what had we got ourselves into! LOL!
Glad you liked the video. I do remember the days of the never ending questions! 🙂

  2. What a beautiful tribute to your parents, Carolyn! It is amazing, isn’t it, how your parents have aged, while you remain such a young chick 😉

Both of my parents have been dead for decades, and quite honestly, they were not model parents. My mother was arrogant, cruel and abusive, but the good part of that is that as I was growing up, I made myself a promise never to be like her. I kept that promise, and while no, I haven’t been a perfect parent, I never intentionally hurt my children, always encouraged them to be the best they could be, and always tried to be there for them.

    • Thanks Jill! 🙂

I am so sorry about your Mom being abusive. I just can’t imagine the pain!!
But kudos to you for rising above it and breaking the chain! I am sure it wasn’t easy! You have such a caring heart. Big hugs my friend. ❤❤

  3. Thank you joyroses for sharing this post, your thoughts and this moving video.
It really touched my heart. You are blessed to still have both your parents alive and I wish them continued health, strength and happiness for the rest of their days.

  4. Like you, I had parents who provided love, support, guidance, and wisdom. Plus a roof over my head, clothes on my back, food in my belly, health care when necessary, and an education that made my future brighter. I wish all kids could say the same. Thanks M&D!

  5. My brothers are 90-ish. (They are much older than me!) One does not look it and is very active. I want time to stop right now (actually 10 years ago) because the thought of losing him is painful. Miss my mom too. She’s been gone since 1986 but some days I forget and want to give her a call. Like you I was gifted with great parents.

  7. Lovely clip.
Sadly my parents are no longer with us, but Mum would have been 97 and my Dad 90 this year. I miss them both, but they are with me every day in the things I see, the way I think and the things I do. I had a lovely childhood and thank them for being my parents.

  8. Like others who have written here, my parents have been gone for a while … they were much older than yours.

For better or worse, our parents shape a lot of who we are – either by repeating their behaviours, using them as our ‘excuse’ for ‘bad luck’, or for making a deliberate decision to be the complete opposite of them.

While I certainly remember less-than-jolly moments, overall I’d have to say, like you, I too have been lucky in the parental category.

I agree completely with your comment that there are no perfect parents. We’re all just trying to do the best we can while juggling the challenges of the real world. I hope my children judge me kindly 💕

  9. Boy, that dad’s a master at guilt trips.
It’s great that your parents are good friends, and that you still have them. That’s something to treasure for as long as it lasts.
I considered my father to be a good friend, but I’m not very close to my mother. He passed away, but I still have my mother. I wish I could be closer to her, but it’s too dangerous. She too is a master at guilt trips.

    • I am very glad that you were able to consider your Dad a good friend. I remember that touching piano post about him that you did.

Sadly there are times we need to stay away from a parent due to it being dangerous, like you said. Guilt tripping and manipulation isn’t what a relationship is supposed to be. My one friend has broken away from her Mom for she is a narcissist. Has always been m, but my friend was deeply hoping it would change but instead she just kept hurting her, Somerimes you have to take a stand for yourself.

  10. I have a decent relationship with my parents now but I did grow up feeling unloved. It’s all good though, I make sure my kids know every single day how loved they are.
My parents did the best they knew how and I can only try to do better. Which, of course, can only be the best I know how. No such thing as a perfect parent, if we’re good enough, that’s good enough! Love, respect and communication, that’s all it takes. Great post!

    • HI Amanda! Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. Appreciate it.
Sorry you had a rough childhood, but so glad to hear of how you make sure your children know that they are loved.
You are very right about love, respect and communication! Those things are very important and yes, we can only do the best we know.
Thanks again for your words and I hope you stop by again.
