Tuesday’s Thoughts!

Good Morning! Hope your week is off to a great start. I do like it being lighter earlier in the morning now, makes it easier to get up early. My Dad was one who always liked early mornings and he still does. When teenagers and wanting to sleep in on Saturday’s,Β  we were often told not to waste away our day by sleeping in. I remember feeling proud of myself when I was younger and it was easy to get up early, as my sisters still laid in bed. Dad would be sitting at the table with his cup of coffee, and he would have some stickers for me, since I was up early. Yes, simple stickers brought joy!

You probably really don’t want to know how many stickers I had in my sticker album. Puffy ones, shiny and sparkly ones, scented ones, animals, hearts, you name it, I had them. Today kids send out all kinds of emojis to their friends. My bestie and I would get together with our bulging sticker albums and trade stickers. Like one trades baseball cards, though stickers definitely rated higher to us than baseball cards. What is something you remember collecting as a child? Feel free to share it below, along with your favorite quote/quotes. Enjoy!

  1. Speaking of uncertainty, I have just been going over my health insurance coverages for next year and after going over numbers and thinking of valuing the risks of this or that, it occurred to me that I am basically performing as a gambling odds maker with my health and that of my children.

What are my odds of needing major hospitalization in 2020 and going on disability? Is it worth this much money a month to indemnify myself against this. If I thought that there was any significant risk that I had a heart-attack coming in the next year, I’d be off to the doctor as soon as possible. So, is the risk close to zero? And this only pays if I have a heart-attack and live. Maybe it would be better spend on more life insurance that would make my kids rich if I die.

In poker, one of my rules is not chasing an inside straight. Is a heart-attack better or worse odds than an inside straight? I had a full EKG a month ago and it was perfect. If I did make the straight, what are the odds of my opponent making a flush? The EKG could have missed some latent symptom that could come up. Do I bet the straight draw to attempt to chase the four-flush out of the pot? It’s only life or death.

  2. Tuesday’s Thoughts become Wednesday’s Words of Wisdom particularly due to the inclusion of #1 and #4 from Dr. Jane Goodall, also known as Dame Jane since 2003. I first became aware of Jane Goodall in 1972 when my toddler son was given a newly published book titled “Grub : The Bush Baby”. It was written by Jane with photographs by her then husband and father of Grub, Baron Hugo van Lawick. There was minimal writing, but adorable photos of Hugo Eric Louis known as Grub. I became a huge fan of Jane Goodall’s work and her books, with an entire bookshelf filled with many of them. Amongst my favorites are 1999’s “Reason For Hope” and the two book autobiography of her life, the April 2000 “Africa in My Blood” and July 2001 “Beyond Innocence”. If I had to choose a favorite quote it would be : “You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” That is one of many framed quotes that hang upon my walls and provide me with inspiration and mindfulness. As yesterday was the Trump Administration’s beginning of our country’s formal withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, the only country to do so, these words have even more resonance. Thank-you!

    • Yes, her words are so good and hold such importance, especially in these times! Glad I could help provide some words to lift you up in sptie of yesterday’s announcement. That quote you have hanging on your wall is one I have saved thinking I may use it next week. πŸ™‚
