The Little Things ….

I had 2 ideas swarming around in my head today for a post. I chose the lighter topic for today, perhaps the heavier topic will be a post for tomorrow.

Sometimes the littlest things can be so important! I know I have mentioned that fact before in a post, but last night it rang true for me once again.

Last night I clicked on a message which my friend had sent me earlier and I hadn’t seen. It was just a simple message asking me how I was doing, and asking me if I had heard of a certain book. They shared a link to Amazon about it saying how they had read it and really liked it and wanted to share it with me.

I didn’t recognize the title so I clicked on the link and that’s when my heart was really touched!

This wasn’t just a matter of a friend sharing a book suggestion with me, which I always appreciate book suggestions, but this went beyond that. I couldn’t tell from the title, but when reading the description of the book I learned that it was about a sensitive topic that is very close to my heart.  She knew that, which compelled her to let me know about the book.

Its those caring moments in time that fill the heart. I knew she was thinking of me when reading the book and that meant a lot.

Something simple, but meaningful….

Today some words were said by someone and while they weren’t directed at me, I still felt the sting. My friend who was sitting beside me at the time, reached over and rubbed my back. No words needed said, I felt the warmth of her touch, and my heart was full.

I was hurting once, but I thought no one knew. I thought I was doing a good job at hiding it. Then a friend looked into my eyes and said, ” I see your pain..” and my dam broke.  A simple gesture, but healing to the heart.

There was a period of time where I was sitting in waiting rooms very frequently. It was hard, but I could always count on a smile from text/email messages sent by a friend just when I needed them.

The hugs, the invitation to come on over to a friend’s place and talk about whatever is on your heart.

The waking up to not Folger’s in your cup but to a short message on your phone from a dear friend telling you what you mean to them.

The feel of the love in the room when visiting with family and  chatting, the hugs given again when parting.

The gemstone that your child gave you so very long ago but that still fills your heart when you see it, for you remember the story behind it.

Something simple, but yet so meaningful….

What little things take up room in your heart?

  1. I have so many, they are precious and priceless. I have a letter from the mother of a foster child, a letter card from Bro about being his sister, the touch of a hand when I have a nightmare, a dog curled up beside me, my poetry book from 1971 that my Mum kept by her bedside…… so many things.

  2. The first thought that entered my mind as I finished reading this lovely post written from your heart are the words from an oft quoted source. “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize that they were the big things.” – Robert Brault. I no longer recall in which of his books that I found that quote, but a favorite one is “Round Up The Usual Subject : Thoughts On Just About Everything” published in June 2014. Amongst the little things that take up room in my heart are the sweet comments that you place on my comments! Thank-you!!

  3. yeah and folgers in your cup is not the best coffee anyway – so it is good to have other little things eh?
and for me – it is running into a former student and having them say something nice – or it is as you note – getting that text that brings sunshine

  4. I’m curious to know what the book is that was recommended. I envy you such friendships as you describe. I’m not asking for pity because life changes, but it’s been a long time since I’ve experienced that.

    • I do feel blessed with the friendships I have and I pray that a friend can come into your life that can turn into a special friendship for you! We all need friends to lean on and ones that will help us smile through life’s journey!
The book is called, “This is How it Always Is” a novel by Laurie Frankel

      • I just read the book blurb on Amazon. I now have it on my wish list. I’m eager to read it.

BTW, have you ever read anything by Lisa Wingate? I love her books and have read all but her most recent, which is a non-fiction book tied to her bestseller “Before We Were Yours”. I was blessed to have the opportunity to read it before it was released and as wonderful as it is, I never foresaw – nor did Lisa – how much of a runaway bestseller (2 years and still going) it would be. It’s been translated into so many languages I’ve lost count and has been optioned for a movie.
