Today got away from me and I didn’t think I would have a post today. This is what happens when you don’t do drafts. But an idea just came up to me due to a conversation with another blogger.
What is one of the most shocking things that you have had happen to you? Something someone said or did that left you speechless.
You know what they say, “Life is stranger than fiction!” Share a moment from your life where that saying holds true!
I will share some of mine in response to anyone that shares theirs. 🙂
I’m shocked you would ask such a thing. Really, I’m speechless.

Okay, here’s a story from my union steward days. I was given the job to represent two letter carriers (a male and a female), who were both AWOL on the same day. They’d been issued Letters of Warning for this offense. When I interviewed the carriers I discovered they’d been having an extramarital affair with each other and were out of town, in flagrante delicto, the day of being AWOL. And they were too far away to make it into work.
This was my very first discipline case. Needless to say, I had to be delicate in my approach to this case. I did manage to get their discipline reduced, and that probably shocked me more than anything else.

Whoa! Yes, that would have been awkward! So did they eventually get together or don’t you know.

I think they eventually got divorces. But I’m not sure if they eventually got together. I changed post offices, and was put in charge of representing a different crowd of rascals.

Hopefully you had some easy cases 🙂

The easiest case was when I came back from my route and the supervisor said that so-and-so was getting an LOW (Letter of Warning) for refusing to deliver some flyers. This can be a fireable offense. But he said he’d be willing to just issue an LOW, and reduce it from 2 years, to 6 months in the file. So I went to the carrier and he said, “Yeah, I’m guilty. 6 months sounds fine.” So I went back to the supervisor, and that’s how we resolved it. If only they were all that easy.

Haha!
No. But after just talking for a little while st the restaurant he asked me if I wanted to go to the Big Apple that night. Yes, he meant New York City, just like a 5 hour drive on a school night. No big deal, right. I should also add that he lied about his age by more than a year or 5 or more.
I was 16 at the time.

The scary part of my first and only blind date was that he waited out in the parking lot in his car for 30 minutes! I was afraid to leave the restaurant for I didn’t trust him due to other things he had said. So after we said bye I had gone to the restroom for a little. Walked outside and saw him sitting in his car so I went back inside and waited.

That does seem a little scary. He may have been planning to take you to the Big Apple, whether you wanted to go or not. I’m glad you survived this incident.

I’m not quite sure it is the kind you are looking for, but here’s a situation that left me speechless for a moment.
A friend (I actually had a crush on him back then) and I were having one of our endless conversations, when he pause, looked at me and said “It’s such a shame you’re not pretty. You would have been the perfect girlfriend!” He wasn’t saying that in an harmful way, I could tell, and he didn’t even realize how insulting that could be! LOL I was in a loss for words for a while, and I couldn’t even be mad at him, because I understood the compliment he was trying to make 😛 Really awkward situation 😛

Oh my gosh!! I am like laughing and yet feeling how awkward that must have been for you at the same time!
Yes, that is a perfect example. Did you guys stay friends?
And it makes me think of a incident that happened with me with a guy. We were dating but it was one of those times where no matter how ai tried I just liked him as a friend. We hadn’t dated long and I didn’t want to lead him on so I wrote a note. Yes, I know such a cop out, a “Dear John” letter.
Well I gave him the note as we passed in the hallway in school. He gave me one too. I read it in class and felt literally sick! He was telling me how he was the happiest he had ever been and how wonderful I was and yeah….I just wanted a hole to open up and swallow me!

i enjoyed some of the stories so far!
and mine ?
in 1991 i worked a summer at a little greek restaurant.
my best friends that summer were Casey and G because we worked together at he greek place – G was the restaurant owner’s son and he had a cool Mitsubishi mirage – and we would go (as friends) to see Casey work at her various night jobs – like she worked at a huge sports bar for a few weeks and served beer out the back of a truck inside the place – it was funny!
that call – back to school and we all split up – then – 14 or 15 months later – fall of 1992 – i was quitting my summer job at a place two
hours from the greek place the summer before –
i was moving 1500 miles away and it was my last night of work –
and guess who came in?
casey – and she said she was banned from there (she was always a little wild child but sweet and awesome) and she took a chance and nobody noticed –
anyhow – we hugged and talked and shared new phone numbers – and it was a god appointment for sure!
i still thank god for it –
i forgot her last name – and went back to that area in 2012 and the greek place is long gone –

I think … probably the most shocking time of my life was when I found myself facing the barrel of a gun pointed at me. It wasn’t, perhaps, the fact that my ex-husband had the gall to drive to my home and threaten me at gunpoint as my own reaction. You might think I cowered in fear, or ran for the door, right? Nope, I saw red, I was so furious, that I ran right past him and his gun and kicked the side of his car in!!! It was a Ford Pinto, and trust me, it doesn’t take much to cave one of those things! Plus … there is that saying, “Never underestimate the power of a woman”. Later … much later … I shook with the realization of what might have happened, but at that moment, I didn’t think, only reacted! Your turn!

Oh my gosh!! Wow! When adrenaline kicks in…..!
Sooo glad you were okay, did he really just turn around and leave after that?? So sorry that you had a ex like that who would dare to threaten you with a gun! Ugh!!
My turn will come as soon as my thinking cap starts thinking. You all are definitely challenging me but it is fun to read everyone’s comments. 🙂

Thanks, my friend! It’s one of those things that eventually you can laugh about it, though it was no laughing matter at the time. What happened was he looked at the huge dent in his car (I do wish I had taken a picture, but this was before the day of cell phones) and I really thought he was going to cry! He said, “Look what you’ve done to my car!!!”, and he did get in it and drive off, by which time campus security had shown up anyway.

I surely can’t think of anything that beats this or even comes close. Very scary and hope you never find yourself in a situation like that again, but I do love your reaction!.
I know what you mean about being caught up in the moment and not thinking about what could happen. We had a fire in my daughter’s room years ago. She slept with her Yorkie in her room. She was standing outside the room screaming. I figured the Yorkie was still in the room. I remember trying to figure out how I could dodge the flames that were as high as the ceiling to save the dog. Right before doing what would have had severe consequences I noticed the dog peeking out of the blanket in my daughter’s arms!!

Oh my!!! I’ve done similar things, though … overlooking what was right in front of my eyes. Now the big question … were you able to get the fire put out before losing the whole house? I’ve often thought, with our five cats, all of whom go into hiding if there is any sort of disturbance, that I would likely die trying to find and rescue them if the house ever caught fire.

Sorry saw this and wasn’t able to respond and then forgot.
Yes, fortunately we did get the fire out. We just lost the room. But it was surprising how quickly smoke filled the entire house and the damage that caused.
Awh on your cats! I hope you never have a fire!

I’m really glad to know you didn’t lose your house … or more importantly, your lives! Homes and ‘things’ can always be replaced, but not so lives.

Pingback: That time when… – Cyranny's Cove
Several years ago, we were on enjoying a local-ish ferry boat ride when I saw a local celebrity, a weather man that I liked from our news station. My family was not near me, and he was within feet of me, plugging in his phone to charge it. I didn’t want to miss the chance to meet him, so I walked up to him and I was literally speechiess. All I could do is ask for a selfie. I don’t think I even told him my name, just “hi, can I take a selfie with you?” My husband was impressed I even did that, considering my introverted disposition.

Ok, I thought of one. At one point I worked as a retail store manager for a small locally-owned chain of card and gift stores. One awful day as I was tallying up the weekly store receipts, I realized that my assistant manager was embezzling money from the store. I couldn’t believe it and sat at my desk, stunned, starring at the numbers for I bet 15 minutes. Of course I had to call the owners to tell them my suspicions & soon thereafter the assistant manager was arrested, but by that time I was over my shock, having moved straight into ticked off.
