“A penny for your thoughts…”
Brad sent me a comic this morning that had that quote in it and the girl wanted to know why her thoughts were only worth a penny. ๐
Did you ever wonder where that phrase came from?
There are so many phrases out there that have been around for centuries, but I always wondered how they began.
I have used this next one several times, but I also don’t know how it started.”Don’t have a cow!”ย I guess it goes along withย “Hold your horses!” which I use as well.
What are some of your favorite phrases to use or ones that you know have been around for quite some time?ย Feel free to share below, I’ll send you a penny. ๐
There is another phrase stuck in my head today. “Life is a Beach!”
It may have to do with the fact that in a little more than 12 hours my dear friend and I will be heading to the beach and we can’t wait!! The sand, the waves, the smell of the ocean air, I am ready to embrace it all. It’s a short stay, we will be back Wednesday night, but we will be soaking up each minute of ocean therapy!
Just wait until my next Fun Friday Flashback post…I’ll share many phrases.๐

How about that old encouragement, “Break a leg!”? That’s supposed to mean, do a great job. But I’ll just say, have a good time at the beach and whatever you do, don’t break a leg.

LOL! I have always thought that saying was strange! ๐ Thank you for your good wishes. I really would rather not break my leg! Don’t you break anything but I hope you have a good week!

“A penny for your thoughts…” – Who knows how that originated, but it goes back to when a penny presumably had some value
“Going to spend a penny” – Going to the washroom in England, where they used to have a coin triggered lock release … which took a penny!
“Let’s hear your 10 cents worth?” – I wonder how much you get for 10 cents?
“Don’t have a cow!” – I believe is “Don’t freak out on me!”
“Hold your horses!” – In England means slow down!
“Life is a Beach!” – I believe is a simple play on words for “Life is a bitch!”

One of my all time favorite books is “A Browser’s Dictionary” by John Ciardi. It’s a wonderfully entertaining compendium of curious expressions and intriguing facts. โบ๏ธ

Pennies used to have much more value. In olden times they were big pieces of real copper, instead of today’s tiny coins made from the cheapest metal the government can get. Kids might get a penny for doing chores, and they were happy to get it. So, it’s probably fair to say that inflation has devalued our thoughts just like everything else.
