The First Meeting

I grew up with dogs, have had one ever since I was born. My first dog was a white toy poodle named Peppy and then there was Buffy and Beauty and the list goes on. I  haven’t known life without a dog and I feel blessed by that. The joy they have given me over the years is priceless! I really can’t imagine life without one.

I have nothing against cats, but I just never really considered myself a cat person, for I had always been around dogs.

There is one cat though that has stolen my heart! He is nothing like my dogs who are so eager to please and they look at me with adoring eyes.

No, this cat is more on the demanding side and will be very quick to let you know if things aren’t up to his standards!

Dewey is his name and he is your very typical, though very special, cat. He lives at Moonbeam Farm with his friends Odessa, the Barn Owl and Jaxon, the Jackalope. He is very good friends with the man-servant as well.  The man-servant is someone who is so quick to meet Dewey’s needs, and his desires, Dewey’s wish is his command!  At least that is how it all started. Over time the man-servant gained some slyness of his own and Dewey has to be a little more careful about trying to pull one over on him. It isn’t always   quite as easy as it was in the very beginning.

What was it like in the very beginning when the man-servant first met Dewey?  Colin, from shared the following excerpt from our newly released  book on his blog a few weeks ago. I thought I would share it today. Hope you enjoy it! Would love to hear your thoughts. Do you have a “Dewey” at your house?

Joshua purchased Moonbeam Farm for his retirement, so that he could live his life in peaceful rural surroundings, but he did not know that he was not alone at Moonbeam Farm until …

One night, he woke up rather earlier than usual and heard a sound from downstairs. He quietly got out of bed and put on his slippers. By the light of the moon, he slowly went down and into his living room, where he quickly turned on the light. He saw that not only was there only one cushion on the sofa, but he also saw a cat near the fireplace, with another cushion in its mouth!

He thought it looked friendly, so he bent down and said, “Who are you then?”

The cat turned its head to face Joshua, and said, “I am Dewey. Who are you?”

Joshua was in shock, as he had not been expecting the cat to talk. “Ummmm … well, I am Joshua Jeremiah Jonathan Jacob Jackson Pebblestone, and I live here.”

“So do I,” said Dewey, “but I was here before you!”

“Well,” said Joshua, “perhaps we can find a way of living together? I wouldn’t mind some company, and I can do a better job of looking after this place than you can.”

Dewey looked at him very seriously for a moment. “Can I keep these cushions?” he asked.

“Of course, you can,” said Joshua. “I’ll get a couple more for the sofa. Is there anything else that you would like?”

“Well,” said Dewey, “I like to sleep on your cushions, but a little blanket or two would be really nice for those cool nights.”

Joshua was really enjoying the conversation, although he really believed that it was all a dream, so agreed readily. “Of course Dewey. You help yourself to anything that you need.”

Dewey started purring and flicking his tail, and then said, “Anything that I need? Really?”

“Yes, of course,” said Joshua “Anything.”

Dewey considered for a moment, and then said, “Would you give me my breakfast every morning, and my dinner every evening? Will you keep my home nice and clean? Will you always let me in if the windows and doors are closed? Will you give me treats every so often? Will you take care of all my needs?”

Joshua was laughing now and said, “Dewey, it will be my great pleasure to share my home with you, and do all those things for you.”

Dewey looked up at him, still purring, his tail flicking even more happily now. “I have only one more request. Only one, and it is really simple.”

“Not a problem,” said Joshua, still laughing and really enjoying the moment. “Go ahead and ask. What is it now?”

“Well,” said Dewey, “I am going to have difficulties calling you ‘Joshua Jeremiah Jonathan Jacob Jackson Pebblestone’. I need something simpler, and as you are now going to be doing so much for me, how about I simply call you ‘Man-Servant’?”

Joshua laughed even more. He had never had a dream quite like this before. “Of course, Dewey. You can call me Man-Servant.”

Joshua was now feeling really tired and decided to go back to bed. Dewey went over to his cushions and curled up into a little ball.

The next morning, Joshua went downstairs and saw a cat curled up on his sofa’s cushions, which were again on the floor near the fireplace. He made himself a cup of tea, and then remembering his dream, walked over to the cat and said jokingly, “So, Dewey, I guess you are going to live here with me then.”

Dewey stretched his legs, flexed his front claws, looked directly at Joshua, and said, “Of course I am. We agreed that last night. Don’t you remember?”

Joshua dropped his cup of tea; his mouth fell open, and he slowly sank to the floor in disbelief. He sat there and looked at Dewey. Dewey, however, got up and walked over to him.

“Now look here, Man-Servant. I have to go outside for a brief visit, and when I come back, I would really like a bowl filled with some breakfast.” He then headed for the door, but before leaving the room, he turned around. “By the way, I hope you’re going to clean up that tea you spilled. Remember … we both live here now!”

Share a Smile!

HI! Just peeking in on you.  I hope that everyone is enjoying a relaxing Sunday.

Owls are known for being very wise, so I had a thought. You can decide if it was a wise one or not! What is something wise that you have heard and will always remember?

Owls may be wise, but I am sure that there are times when they and all other animals find us humans very perplexing! What is something that perplexed you this past week?

Monkeys are known to be silly! What silly, amusing thing happened to you this week?

Lions are the Kings of the Jungle but even lions can get embarrassed at times! I know that there have been plenty of times I have felt like the lion below.  All I have to do is get in my car and …  welll ….  oh the stories the dents could tell.  But, what about you?

Feel free to share any answers below if you would like. Share a smile with us!

Suspense builds … “The Starfish of the Sea Cafe” Part 2

If you missed it here is the link to Part 1 that was posted on Thursday. “The Starfish of the Sea Cafe”

Lana and Lucy continued staring at each other and started guessing the names of people that they thought may perhaps have sent the flowers. As they started walking again in the soft sand their minds were still going.

Lana shook her head at the last name that Lucy had given. “I don’t know, I am so confused. If only the card would say a little more on it than just my name. More details surely would be helpful!”

Lucy nodded her head as she bent down to gently pick up a pretty pink butterfly shell. They were so fragile.

“I agree. It really does make you wonder who your secret admirer is.”  She smirked as she looked at Lana, who rolled her eyes in return.

They enjoyed the rest of the day walking and talking and lying on the beach as they read.

Thanks to Lucy, they had a a whole flock of seagulls making a large circle around them. They were drawing closer and closer to their towels. Lucy had a pack of unsalted sunflower seeds that she was throwing out to them. She had read that they were very good for seagulls.

They stayed on the beach to watch the sunset. Seeing the sun set over the water was so beautiful, nothing compared. They were quiet for awhile as they watched, each lost in their own thoughts as they listened to the waves speak and felt the magic of the night.

Later on that night they enjoyed walking through the town and visiting their shops. They stopped in at the Starfish of the Sea Cafe to enjoy a late night bite and some tea. Lana had ordered a piece of coconut cream pie. It was served on a cute seashell plate. She really was going to miss this place when she went back home.

They finished up their cups of  soothing Chamomile tea and walked back to the hotel. When they entered the lobby, Lucy saw a bouquet of purple orchids sitting on the front desk. She gave Lana a little nudge and pointed at them.

“They are so pretty!” Lana said as she looked at them. Then the clerk at the desk looked up and met her eyes. He smiled as he called her over.

“These flowers are for you Miss.” and he pointed to the orchids.

Lucy was grinning ear to ear and Lana managed to stammer out a Thank You as she picked up the beautiful orchids.

When back in their room she pulled out the card and this time there was a little more written on it. “For the lady whose smile makes my heart bloom!:

“We are definitely dealing with a secret admirer here!” said Lucy

Lana tried to hide her blushing face behind a pillow as Lucy laughed.

Downstairs in the lobby Roman was sitting and staring straight ahead with a smile on his face.

A  couple came up to the desk to check in. After they left ,  he  picked up a book to read as it was getting late and he wasn’t expecting any other new guests to arrive.

After a few minutes of reading he stopped and pulled out a piece of paper writing a note to himself. Call Sherry’s Chocolates and order a box of a dozen chocolate covered strawberries. He thought they would be a nice addition to the Star Lilies that he was also picking up tomorrow.

“The Starfish of the Sea Cafe”

Lana walked into the quaint cafe and sat down by a beautiful fountain that resembled the ocean. She loved listening to the water cascading down like waves. The walls were painted with ocean waves and seashells in the sand.  There was a variety of brightly colored fish and starfish swimming in the waves. She was mesmerized by the paintings, it looked like the waves were coming off the wall. This may  very well turn out to be her favorite cafe for the week that she was here.

Lana had decided to take a week excursion to a place that she had never been before. She was a teacher and her summer vacation was almost over. She wanted to relax and enjoy some solitude before the school year started.

She was looking forward to the school year starting, was planning on this year being much better. Last year was her very first year and she had been so nervous about it. This year she felt much more prepared.

Yesterday her plane had landed. She was excited to explore, but jet lag had got the best of her, so she didn’t see much besides her hotel room. Though she did walk outside her room and sink her feet into the sand while she stared at the waves. Really she didn’t need to explore any further than here, here was her happy place and she was at peace! Her curiosity though got the best of her today, so after a morning at the beach she had cleaned up and got dressed to take a walk into town.

“The Starfish of the Sea Cafe” had captured her attention by its name and that was how she had walked into this lovely ocean cafe!

Lana realized that she better look at the menu for the waitress would probably soon be coming. She picked it up just as the waitress came to her table. To Lana’s surprise the waitress put a bowl of Cream of Crab soup in front of her along with her favorite Latte.

“Wait! This can’t be for me, you must have the wrong table, I didn’t even order yet.”  Lana said to the waitress.

“You are Lana, right?”

Lana’s eyes got big as she replied hesitantly “um…yes, that is my name, but…”

“Then this is for you.” replied the waitress with a smile. She turned around and her red curls bounced as she quickly walked to the next table to take their order.

Lana stared at what had been placed in front of her. Goosebumps were breaking out on her arms. How did the waitress know her name and how did she know her favorite kind of soup and latte??? Lana couldn’t even eat at first, she was in too much shock. Finally she did start sipping at her Latte and tried some of soup, it was simply delicious.

Kelly, her waitress came to ask how everything was and Lana told her but then she quickly said. “I need to ask you a question. How did you know my name? ”

Kelly blushed, ” I am sorry, but I can’t tell you. Just know that all the meals you get here have already been paid for, have a wonderful day!” and again a smile lit up her face reaching all the way to her sea blue eyes before she turned and walked away.

Lana gulped! Now the wheels were really  turning quickly in her mind. What was going on??  She started wondering about the week ahead of her, feeling like she may be in for much more of an adventure than she had planned on!

She left the cafe and thought that perhaps she needed to go lie on the beach to stop her whirling mind. So she walked back to her hotel room to change. When she walked past the front desk, the lady behind the counter called out her name. Lana turned and the lady motioned her to come up to the desk. Sitting on the desk was a beautiful bouquet of pansies and baby’s breath. It was so colorful and it almost took her breath away when she realized it was for her. There was a card with her name on it and that was it, it had been left unsigned.

As Lana carried them to her room she felt like she was walking in a dream. Someone obviously knew she was here. Were they here too or had this been planned by the “mystery person” all in advance?

She opened her  door and was grabbed from behind. Lana let out a shriek until she realized who it was! It was her crazy and amazing friend Lucy!

“You didn’t think I could really let you come to enjoy this wonderful little island all by yourself did you?”

Lana was speechless as she stammered out, “but … but…I thought you had other plans?”

“I did, but they got cancelled and so I thought I would surprise you and have a little fun with it at first. Did you enjoy your latte and soup?”  she say with a coy smile.

Lana bopped her with a pillow.

“Oh my gosh! You had me totally freaked out you nut I can’t believe you are here! We are going to have a blast!”

They were laughing as they quickly changed for the beach and headed out the door. Soon they were walking along ocean’s edge talking and looking for seashells.

“Oh, I forgot to ask you, who were those gorgeous flowers from that I almost knocked out of your hand when I surprised you?”, asked Lucy.

Lana laughed, ” I am pretty confident they were from you my tricky friend! You can fess up now, and Thank you, you know that pansies are my favorite flower.”

Lucy stopped walking as she turned to Lana and said, “Those pansies weren’t from me, I had nothing to do with that! Wasn’t there a name on the card?”

Lana felt a wave hit her in the back as her heart started thumping. “No, there wasn’t any name on the card except mine!”

Lana asked the question that they both were wondering, ” But if you didn’t send the flowers than who did?”

They stared at each other dropping  the seashells that had been in their hands as another wave crashed down on them.

Sounds of School

One parent finds it hard to stop talking to their child, even though they are all moved in. With one more hug goodbye the parent walks away from her child’s dorm room and wipes at the tears that they had been trying to hide.

One parent finishes up school shopping for their child who is about to enter Middle School. Gone are the days of the cute backpacks, now they need something cool!

One parent tucks their excited 5 year old into bed, as they babble on about being so excited to ride the  big yellow bus and the parent tries to swallow the lump in their throat. Where did their little boy go?

School time is in the air and some kids are excited while others drag their feet and groan.

Once again there will be noisy buses with the chatter of many students, while some try to drown out the chatter with earbuds as they lose themselves in the music.

School hallways around the world once more will be filled with the sound of students. Some happy as they wave to their friends and some dreading the test that is coming. Wishing that school would suddenly dismiss early and save them from the test!

Students of all ages and sizes will be walking through the school doors. Students from all different backgrounds, coming together for one sole purpose. To learn. To get an education,  to help prepare them for a future where they can strive to make their dreams come true.

School is in session again and I pray that the sound of gunshots will be one thing that is not heard in the hallways this year, for every child deserves to have an education that’s not interrupted by the sound of gunfire or by the sight of the splattered blood of their classmates.  Our children are walking into the doors of a school, not into some House of Horrors.

May this year be the year where the sound of gunshots ringing throughout a school will be forever silenced!

Tuesday’s Thoughts!

Spontaneity can make fun memories. What spontaneous things have you done that bring good memories to your mind? Yes, there are times that we need to plan things out and get involved with details, but there are those other times where its fun to run under a sprinkler or jump in a puddle. Times where you call a friend and say “let’s do lunch!” Times at night when the hour is late, but you take your kids out for some food. When you decide to send a card to a friend, no special occasion, just letting them know they are special.

Don’t miss out on the unplanned moments of life, for sometimes they can become some of the best times!

Irrepressible Spirit

“The wonder of dawn, each sunrise a gift.

   Reflected in upturned eyes.

Blessings abound, my cup runneth over,

Magnificent passion to live!

Thankful my heart – a tulip, a rose,

  blossoming in my soul.”

                                                                                                         by Vickie Baker

The above poem is from a book that I just started reading. It is called “Wings of Joy” by Vickie Baker.

It seems like I go in stages with books. Either I am wondering how it could happen that I have nothing to read, or I have a stack of books calling my name. I need a beach trip, sitting on the beach with a book and listening to the roar of the waves!  Ahhh! what better place can there be?

What image do you get in your mind as you read the short poem above?  Would you be surprised to know that the author is a quadriplegic? She used to be a trapeze artist but one wrong landing ended her career and the life she used to know. But yet she can write the words, ” blessings abound, my cup runneth over!”

Are you like me? Did you do a little gulp thinking, “Wow, how can I even think of complaining about little things when someone who is a quadriplegic can say that their cup runneth over!”

This is such a winning attitude and it really is the difference between living a life of self pity or deciding that you can rise above whatever life throws at you! Realizing that you may have a lot of challenges with this new spin on your life, but knowing that there are still many joys that await you and you aren’t going to miss out on them!

This wasn’t an overnight attitude that Vickie developed, she did have her hard days, days she wanted to give up, but she didn’t. Its not about her falling down, its about her determination to get back up! She didn’t let herself drown in a mire of self pity.

There is one more quote from her book that I wanted to share. It is so true!  In her book Vickie shares that humor was a big help in her recovery. She writes, “When we take a nosedive, humor is the safety net that helps us bounce back into the swing of things.”

Keep swinging and may your cup run over with JOY today about the things you have to be thankful for!

Feel free to share below some things that you are thankful for today!

A Weekend of Blessings!

Today has been a good day! My sister and her family came for a visit. Always nice to see them.  We got together at my parents and just enjoyed chatting. Every time I see my nephews its like they grow taller, even though being in their 20’s now they are done growing. My niece is married now so its nice to enjoy another nephew in the family. Tomorrow I get to see my other sister and her family for a little when we stop in on the way back from visiting a dear friend!

It is a weekend of enjoying family and friends that are like family. Tomorrow afternoon we are going to visit my wonderful friend Sherry and her family, who are very dear to me. We always have a great time together!

One thing that we usually do when we get together is play games. There seems to be a pattern that has developed  when we play games. Sherry pretty much always wins! So I am going to make a prediction to all of you. I am predicting that tomorrow the tables will turn and I will win most of the games. Whether its card games or miniature golf. We thought of doing that if its not too hot and humid or raining. Of course we may have the miniature golf course to ourselves if its raining.

I will let you know if my prediction comes true. Whether or not it comes true, it won’t change the fact that we will have a fun day of connecting face to face with each other again and how grateful I am for our 20 plus years of friendship.  A friendship that is still growing strong.

Relationships are so very special! In this world of ever increasing technology where they always seem to be advertising something that is bigger and better, there is one thing that technology just can’t do. They can’t make anything that compares to the love between humans. There is nothing that will ever take the place of having another caring soul to relate too. The bonds we make between our hearts and the hearts of the ones we hold so dear are priceless and they always will be!
