The Ugly Ducklings and The Three Little Pigs (with a twist)

“Make way! Make way!”  cried the bold swan.  Charlie had no thread of shyness in him. He was loud but very friendly. “Make way! Make way, for my new friends.”

All the swans turned their heads to see what all the fuss was about. They got out of the way, for when Charlie spoke everyone knew to listen.  If they didn’t listen the first time they were sure to not make the mistake again,  after experiencing Charlie’s not so gentle bite.

They all gasped though when they looked at Charlie’s new friends.

They had to be some of the ugliest ducks they had ever seen! What was Charlie thinking?

They watched as Charlie swam around with his new friends. He seemed like he was having a fun time. Later in the day some other swans did swim over to them to introduce themselves and soon they were having fun with Charlie and his new friends too.

The other swans still watched from a distance, they weren’t sure of these odd looking birds.  They were curious though.  Gradually other swans, one by one,  swam over to join the group. Slowly the one group began to diminish in size and the other group sure looked like they were having more fun.

Everyone cheered, when at long last Ebenezer came swimming over to join everyone else and introduced himself to the new ducks.  Ebenezer was about as grumpy as Charlie was friendly, but don’t be fooled, underneath his rough exterior, there was a soft heart.  You just had to be brave enough to see through the walls that he tried to put up.  By nightfall all of the swans had met Charlie’s new friends and had warmly accepted them.

As time passed the swans had forgotten that they  had ever thought of the other ducks as odd or ugly. They had a much better name for them now. The name “friends”,  and they swam together happily ever after.

The Three Little Pigs

On one cold day a bad storm was raging,  and the 3 little pigs were so happy to be all together in  their nice cozy home by the fireplace. They were all playing cards when they heard a knock on the door. The youngest brother Ollie  went to open the door. Upon opening it and seeing who it was he quickly shut it! His brothers looked up from the table, ” Why did you shut the door? Was no one there? Why are you looking so pale?”

Ollie was shaking all over as the knocking was heard again.

“It was the wolf! Remember the one who we heard was going to come and blow our straw house down!”

The color quickly drained from his brothers faces when they heard the news. After a little bit the knocking stopped as they remained frozen to the floor.

“Perhaps he left now, Ollie try peeking out the door.”  the oldest brother said.

Oliver opened the door just a crack and to his surprise the wolf was sitting on the ground crying!

Ollie opened it further, for he had a tender heart, he didn’t like to see anyone cry.

“Why are you crying oh wolf, shouldn’t we be the ones crying? Aren’t you here to blow our house down?”

The wolf looked up at Ollie and wiped as his eyes. “No…No….I…I …just am very cold and wet and l-l-lonely.”

Ollie’s  heart felt a  strong tug and the next thing he knew he heard himself inviting Mr.Wolf into their house to warm himself by the fire.

Ollie’s brothers thought that it had finally happened. That crazy Ollie had totally lost his mind!  The oldest brother, the most logical one,  Sigmund, went into the kitchen to quickly write his living will and testament.

Jasper stayed with Ollie, not saying much but keeping a very close eye on the door in case he needed to make a very quick exit.  He wasn’t too afraid, for he knew he had 9 lives, oh wait, he was confused again. That was cats not pigs!  Jasper shook his head,  he got confused so easily at times. Now he was beginning to feel more scared.

After some awkward silence Ollie asked the wolf a question.

“How good are you at playing cards, Mr.Wolf?”

The wolf smiled showing all his teeth and Ollie and Jasper immediately shrunk back in fear.

“I’m sorry!” the wolf replied, “didn’t mean to frighten you! I promise that you can trust me. You were so kind to let me in out of the cold and rain.  You took a chance and I won’t let you down. ”

Ollie and Jasper smiled as their hearts began to slow down and a sense of peace came over them. They all had a seat at the table, letting Mr. Wolf be the closest to the fire to dry his wet fur, as they began to teach him how to play Old Maid.

Sigmund finally ventured out of the kitchen later to join them in the game and soon all of them were laughing into the night as they played cards and told tales.

After that day Mr.Wolf spread the word around  to the other wolves about the 3 little pigs that had given him shelter in the storm and that they were not to be hurt! Woe to any wolf that tried! The 3 little pigs lived happily ever after knowing that no wolves would ever be a threat to them again.

Oh, and every Friday night Mr.Wolf would show up to play cards. Ollie,  being the youngest, needed more sleep and usually fell asleep before the others would finish playing.

Friday’s Super Short Stories!

“Red fish, green fish”, feeling like a Dr. Seuss book. Green fish says “Go ahead, you know your curious, just ask” … Red fish says, ” Stop, are you sure, what if the answer turns you red like me?”

Keep Smiling, Stay laughing …. A smile on the face, plays a melody in the heart and laughter makes the soul dance.

Friends lift you up and won’t let you drown in a puddle of your “whine”.

Lost in Time

She was thankful for the moonlight shining on her path as she made her way through the deep, dark woods. She jumped as she heard the sound of a branch snapping, and then she realized that it was her foot which had stepped on the branch and snapped it.

She kept walking as she listened to the sounds of the owls calling and of the Nighthawk.  Oh how many times she had walked through these woods as a child. Back then if she had to travel through the woods at night the trees loomed over her and used to look so scary, compared to how they seemed in the daylight. Now though the woods spoke comfort to her soul. She felt peace being among the trees and hearing the familiar night sounds.

As the trees got less dense she could tell that she was getting closer to her destination.  Her heart smiled as she continued to walk.  She was looking forward to seeing the lake again, it had been so long.  How many nights had she spent sitting by the lake as she had grown older and wasn’t frightened by the dark any longer?  How many times had she come here just to clear her brain and think while she was growing up?

The moons reflection on the lake was just as beautiful as she had remembered it. She drew in a deep breath as she wondered again why she had stayed away from this peaceful place for so long.  The sounds of the owls were behind her and now the bullfrogs were singing their song.  She sat down on the soft grass, touching it with her hands,  watching the ripples on the water.

As she stared out into the lake she felt something magical in the air.  It had been so long since she had been to this lake, why had she come now?  Why had she felt such a strong desire to drive several hours to get here tonight?  She propped her head on her knees as she wondered.

The bullfrogs serenaded her and the moonlight danced on the water as she tried to quiet her mind and listen to her heart.

When the sky falls open and the stars pour onto the shimmering waves of moonlight, I want to feel your fingers lace through mine as I lean back against your chest, and your warm breath raises little bumps on my skin… ~Charlotte (PixieWinksFairyWhispers) (from Pinterest)

Looking back

I was hoping to have a post earlier today, but its just been one of those days, where it felt like I was running around all day.  It was a good day, just a busy one, so here it is 6:45 pm as I write, but hey “It is what it is!” “C ‘est la vie!”

I took some time reading through old journals of mine. Oh I could never wonder what to post again, if I just started posting my journal entries. Sorry, that’s not going to happen! But now and then I may share some snippets.

I was just randomly reading entries when I found one that talked about my job right out of High school. I worked at a fast food restaurant in the food court at our local mall. Back when malls flourished and were the place to be, unlike today! We kept very busy there.

There was one day when my manager let me know the day before that he was going to be late. During the times when he was gone for a bit he would put me in charge, it was nice knowing that he trusted me.

This one particular day I was in his office doing paperwork and the phone rang. It was a man wanting to know if he could pick up 40 Chicken sandwiches in about one hour. We never had that big of order before. We  only had one cook that morning and I was thinking how I really wish my boss was there right now! Along with the 40 chicken sandwiches he wanted 40 med/large fries to go with it and of course drinks. He had an accent so it was hard to understand him as I was frantically writing things down. He wanted to know how much the 40 sandwiches would cost and then wanted to know if there could be a cost difference if he didn’t get the bun and just got 40 fillets of chicken. As I was figuring out prices it was silent on the other end for a bit and then I heard laughter. Wait a minute, I recognized the sound of that laughter.  Yes, I recognized it very well, for it was my manager!! He congratulated me on how well I handled the conversation. I told him that he might want to consider staying home the rest of the day for his own safety!

Around that same time I had written about the guy I liked who came to order food from us each day. He worked at the music store. My friend was trying to fix us up. She knew him well and said that she knew he liked me.  So one day she was there with him and I was waiting on him. She gave him a nudge and said, “So do you like her?”  Yes, I still remember the look I gave my friend when she said that.  He said, “Yes, who wouldn’t like her!”  Oh gosh! Did I mention this was a public place with lots of people around. But hey it worked, he asked me out on a date and yes my heart was swooning.

Those memories brought smiles and then I read about my last day working there. I was moving down South. My last day was filled with tears because goodbyes are so hard! I still remember scrubbing the counters extra hard that day, even though they didn’t need it. I needed to do something to try to keep a handle on my emotions.

As I finished reading and closed my journal and a thought came to me. I never saw any of my co-workers, boss or that special guy again. I walked out that day closing a chapter on my life and was on the way to starting a new one.

I look back now and think how far I have come since then.  At that time, on that day I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. I just knew that my heart was hurting.  Now though I can see all the great things that  have happened since then. All the adventures that were waiting for me.

We go through so many chapters in life, beginnings and endings.  Sometimes it can be hard to see past the pain of an ending, but we need to remember that we will make it. That there are still adventures waiting to happen.   We need to just remember to follow the yellow brick road.

Tuesday’s Thoughts!

Happy June! I hope your June has started of well. One bright thing about the beginning of June is that its my dear sister-in-law’s birthday! When I married Brad I gained another wonderful sister.  I wish we did live closer,  but am just thankful today for the extra love she’s brought to my heart. I told her to make it here by supper time and we would treat her to a birthday dinner.  She’s gonna try. 🙂 We only live a little over 500 miles apart, no problem!  Smile, enjoy the quotes and have a beautiful day!

The Power of Believing

My daughter ended her Senior year with the best report card that she has ever had in her 12 years of school!  School did not come easy for her, but this year she proved to herself that she could do it!  She believed in herself and she did it!

I feel so many times that we tell ourselves that we can’t do something for one reason or another. There are plenty of reasons out there that we can easily find. We fall into the trap of giving into so many self doubts and have a long list of why things won’t work the way we want them to.

When a hopeful feeling does pop into our head, we quickly muffle it by telling it that there’s no way, that we are just dreaming and not being practical. Soon we have become experts at muffling the hope. The dream that really could have happened lies buried underneath rocks of unbelief, fear and doubt.

I heard a little story  from a friend over the weekend as an illustration to show what can happen when one believes in themselves.  I found this story on the http://www.Spiritual-Short-Stories.com website after hearing it from a friend.  The website did give permission to share the story.  The author of the story is unknown but I felt touched by the story and hope you do too. While the story may not be true, I feel the message it gives  is very true and hope it encourages you to apply it to yourself. Never stop believing in YOU!

A business executive was deep in debt and could see no way out. Creditors were closing in on him. Suppliers were demanding payment. He sat on the park bench, head in hands, wondering if anything could save his company from bankruptcy.

Suddenly an old man appeared before him. “I can see that something is troubling you”, he said.

After listening to the executive’s woes, the old man said,” I believe I can help you.”

He asked the man his name, wrote out a check, and pushed it into his hand saying, Take this money. Meet me here exactly one year from today, and you can pay me back at that time.

Then he turned and disappeared as quickly as he had come. The business executive saw in his hand a check for $500,000. It was signed by John D. Rockefeller, then one of the richest men in the world!

I can erase my money worries in an instant! he realized.

But instead, the executive decided to put the un-cashed check in his safe. Just knowing it was there might give him the strength to work out a way to save his business, he thought. With renewed optimism, he negotiated better deals and extended terms of payment. He closed several big sales. Within a few months, he was out of debt and making money once again.

Exactly one year later, he returned to the park with the un-cashed check. At the agreed-upon time, the old man appeared. But just as the executive was about to hand back the check and share his success story, a nurse came running up and grabbed the old man. I’m so glad I caught him! she cried. I hope he hasn’t been bothering you. He’s always escaping from the rest home and telling people he’s John D. Rockefeller. then she led the old man away by the arm.

The astonished executive just stood there, stunned. All year long he’d been wheeling and dealing, buying and selling, convinced he had half a million dollars behind him. Suddenly, he realized that it wasn’t the money, real or imagined, that had turned his life around. It was his new found self-confidence that gave him the power to achieve anything he ever imagined.

A Smile Break!

My mind was very busy this weekend. Just one of those times where it feels like your mind is going all the time.  I feel it is time for a “Smile Break!” I can always depend on Pinterest to give me pictures to smile about.  Found some rather different animals this time. Hope you like them!  Feel free to make a caption for the picture or you can just say “Awh!” 🙂 Happy Sunday to you!

There really are amazing creatures all over our world!  I am so glad! This world would be pretty dull without the wonderful animals that inhabit it and that sometimes can really teach us humans a thing or two!

We also couldn’t do without the more typical animals who make amazing pets!
