Daily Prompt: Dilemma

Valerie’s Dilemma

It was a blustery, Fall day and the 2 friends were chatting, as they always did. It seemed that they could never run out of things to talk about. They were trying to decide what to do and had decided to walk to the mall.

They continued talking and laughing as they wandered through the stores, looking at the merchandise. Oh, it was Valerie’s favorite candy! She had to pick it up, as she thought about getting it. Laughing at something Katie had said they continued on.

They were about 1/2 down the mall when Valerie stopped in her tracks! What had she done? The bag of Hershey kisses were in her hand and opened, with a few missing. Talking and walking gives you the munchies you know. It would have been no big deal, but Valerie remembered how she had never paid! She had clearly not been  thinking and had been distracted as they exited the store. The logical thing to do would be to go back to the store and explain to the clerk and pay for the bag of candy. To Valerie’s dismay upon opening her wallet, she discovered she only had pennies. Katie’s wallet wasn’t any better! They had come to the mall to just browse, a way to pass time, now Valerie was faced with a dilemma. If the bag  never would have been opened it would have been easy just to put it back on the shelf, but…. that wasn’t the case.

Tiffany’s dilemma

Tiffany loved working at a little restaurant in the mall. Her boss was great and for the most part her co-workers were also. They had fun as they worked together. There were days that the boss put Tiffany in charge if he knew he wasn’t going to be able to be there. It made Tiffany feel good, knowing the confidence he had in her. She never had a problem with it until one day.

Things were going well until she had to speak to Tammy. It was Tammy’s turn to squeeze the lemons for their freshly squeezed lemonade. Tiffany informed her of that and Tammy said, “No way!”as she glared at Tiffany. Tammy was one of the employees that wasn’t the easiest to work with.

Tiffany looked at Tammy and said , “Fine, if you don’t want to squeeze the lemons, you can go home.” Tammy’s eyes were defiant as she looked down at Tiffany and she said NO again. Tiffany responded with a courage that she didn’t really fully feel,  “You will not be running the register, either squeeze lemons or go home.” Tammy’s eyes blazed as she threatened Tiffany, saying she would punch her face in. Tiffany’s insides were quivering. She knew Tammy was very capable of doing that and most likely not bluffing. Confrontations were not Tiffany’s thing. The other employees were looking at her, wondering what she would do. They knew the boss had put her in charge. The easiest thing to do would be to give in to Tammy, but would that be fair to the other employees? They  always took their turn at the job that no one really liked? What was she to do?

What would your advice to Valerie and Tiffany be? Are these real situations from years ago, or just creative thoughts inspired by the word Dilemma?  Life is full of dilemma’s and choices, some are little ones some are bigger, but we always have a choice to make. Sometimes we make wise ones and sometimes not.

Jaxon and the Mouse – Part II

Good Morning friends! Here is the sequel that you have  been patiently waiting for. I am sure that you will find  that it was worth the wait 🙂 Thanks again to my guest writer!  In a lot of the stories the man-servant may have the problem of  running into bad luck, but he really is a good egg, eh? Just perhaps a little cracked 🙂  ENJOY and be sure to let him know what you thought in the comments below.

Jaxon suddenly remembered his magic powers and, after a few very quiet and mystical words, found himself sitting on the top of a sunflower! He looked around and saw that they were only a short walk to the woods. He slid down the sunflower stem and announced the good news. “Great” said the man-servant. “Which way do we have to go then?” Jaxon looked around. Did he turn as he came down the sunflower stem? “I don’t know” he said “But wait just a minute” and he disappeared and was once again on top of a sunflower! This time he made a careful note of where the woods were, and slid straight down to the ground “We have to go that way” he said pointing.
As they came out of the sunflowers and reached the edge of the woods, they heard a very strange sound. It was ghost like… a rather weak Woo…Hoo sound coming from partially up a nearby tree. Dewey felt that he could quietly climb up and see what it was. While the man-servant and Jaxon waited below, Dewey very quietly climbed up the tree trunk and suddenly…. there was the source of the ghostly noises! “ODESSA!” he shouted. “WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU DOING HERE?” It was too late however because Odessa, in total shock, had fallen off the branch and was heading down to the ground at great speed!  Fortunately she landed on Jaxon and was fine, apart from her pride being a little bruised. She quickly recovered and, seeing the man-servant and Jaxon staring at her said “What?” Jaxon looked at her “What do you mean? What?” Odessa fluffed up her feathers for greater impact and said “Dewey woke me up so badly that I fell off my branch, I could have hurt myself!” Dewey was down by now and said all he did was call “Odessa!”. Jaxon and the man-servant both said, in unison, “Of course you did. That’s her name!” Odessa looked at all three of them in total disbelief and said “I know that!”
They all headed back through the woods, across their field and into their barn. The man-servant did not immediately go back to the house but just stood there, in the barn, and staring at Odessa. Odessa look at him “What?” The man-servant sat down on the floor just in front of her “Tell me Odessa, why were you not flying over the sunflowers when we needed you?” Odessa rotated her head while she thought about it. “Mice!” she said “Mice!”. Dewey was now looking at her with great interest and said “Mice? What about mice?” Odessa turned to face Dewey “There were so many on the other side of the field, and I love mice, and I was hungry!” “How many did you eat?” said the man-servant. “Can’t remember…but lots!” Dewey looked at her “You found a great stash of mice and you didn’t tell me?” “I was going to ” said Odessa “but before I knew it, I had eaten them all and needed to nap. That’s when you, Dewey, so rudely woke me up!

All was well in the barn until they heard some loud scuffling from outside. As they turned towards the door, it fell down with a great crash and so much dust that they could not see anything. As the dust slowly settled, Jaxon saw a giant mouse coming towards them and looking really threatening. Odessa, the man-servant and Dewey had all disappeared. It was just him and this enormous mouse, and it was getting closer and had its mouth wide open! Just then he heard “Wake up! Wake up! It’s another day for an adventure”. Jaxon rolled over in order to stand up, but he was in shock! He just lay there and looked at Dewey. “What is your problem?” he asked. “Do you have any idea what time it is?” “Yes” replied Dewey. “It’s time to start a new adventure. I want to explore the field on the other side of the woods. What’s your problem?” Jaxon looked at him “My problem is that I just had a  really bad dream and I’m not going anywhere with you today!”

Are you a Giving Tree

Great book that teaches about being thankful and generous and not self-seeking:

I have always been a voracious reader. I remember as a child that as long as I had a book in my hand I was happy. Books came in so handy for those times when we went visiting and my siblings were  entertained by children their age, but the house that we  were  at had no children my  age. I would take the book in my hand and open it up and instantly I was swept away into a far off land.  I could tune out the conversations going on around me,  as I went on my own adventure.

Yes, so many books, so little time! We may not have time to read all the good books that are out there, BUT…if you haven’t yet, make sure you read The Giving Tree.

One of the great things about my job, is being able to read Children’s books again. I could do it at home, but my dear teenagers may really wonder what Mom is doing! There was a time about 2 years ago where I pulled out some of their favorite Children’s books from when they were little and I started reading out loud. Did they give me strange looks? Perhaps, though that is nothing new. The thing is, that  in spite of the strange looks they sat there and listened to the stories, they didn’t walk away. Yes, there is magic in Children’s stories.

The Giving Tree is a beautiful story of unconditional love. “….and the tree loved the boy so much, loved him even more than she loved herself.” She is constantly giving of herself to the boy. When he is little he swings on her branches and eats her apples. As he grows, she misses visiting with him and whenever he would come and need something she was quick to offer whatever she had. Time went on and one day the boy came to the tree and the tree was sad. The tree thought she had nothing left ti give the boy. What was she to do?

And after a long time the boy came back again.
“I am sorry, Boy,” said the tree, “but I have nothing left to give you-
My apples are gone.”
“My teeth are too weak for apples,” said the boy.
“My branches are gone,” said the tree.
“You cannot swing on them-”
“I am too old to swing on branches,” said the boy.
“My trunk is gone,” said the tree.
“You cannot climb-”
“I am too tired to climb,” said the boy.
“I am sorry,” sighed the tree.
“I wish that I could give you something… but I have nothing left. I am an old stump. I am sorry…”
“I don’t need very much now,” said the boy, “just a quiet place to sit and rest. I am very tired.”
“Well,” said the tree, straightening herself up as much as she could,
“well, an old stump is a good for sitting and resting. Come, Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest.”
And the boy did.
And the tree was happy.”
Shel Silverstein, The Giving Tree

A Dewey Story – “Jaxon and the Mouse”

Good Morning my friends! No, it is not Saturday yet, but didn’t think you would mind a surprise Dewey story. This one is brought to you by a guest writer today. Out of the kindness of my heart I offered him a chance to  create an adventure for Dewey and his friends.  Who is it you ask? If you have been following the Dewey stories for awhile, then I am pretty confident that  you will be able to guess.  Here is a clue, sadly the man-servant doesn’t have much bad luck 🙂  ENJOY!

Jaxon and the Mouse – Part I

It was very early on a Summer’s day, and the blue skies were sharing the heavens with a few large white puffy clouds. There was a very slight breeze, but Jaxon couldn’t feel it as he was wedged in his favorite corner of the barn and sound asleep. That was until Dewey jumped on him! “Wake up! Wake up! said Dewey. “It’s another day for an adventure”. Jaxon rolled over in order to stand up, but he was so tired! He just lay there and looked at Dewey. “What is your problem?” he asked. “Do you have any idea what time it is?” “Yes” replied Dewey. “It’s time to start a new adventure. I want to explore the field on the other side of the woods!” Jaxon looked at him “What field? What woods? What is your problem?”

“Look Jaxon” said Dewey ” On the other side of your barn, there is a big field and on the other side of that are woods” Jaxon gave him a rather quizzical look and said “When did you go over to the other side of that field?” “I didn’t! ” said Dewey. “Well, well, well” said Jaxon “How could you possibly know about the woods and, more significantly, how do you know about another field?”” You are quite a confusing cat!” Dewey turned around and, with tail up in the air and head held high said “Odessa told me!”

“Odessa!” said Jaxon “I should have known!” Just at that moment  he heard a loud whoosh-whoosh… whoosh-whoosh… whoosh-whoosh… sound and Odessa landed right next to him. She looked at him and said “You called?” “No I didn’t call you Odessa” he said. “Well you should have” replied Odessa “because that is my name, and I won’t respond to any other name.” Jaxon blinked and looked at Dewey who was wagging his tail and smiling, and then looked back at Odessa “Why would I call you Odessa?” “Because that’s my name” said Odessa. Jaxon was now getting rather perplexed, and Dewey was just enjoying the show, then he continued “Odessa, I don’t need you and, at this time in the morning, I don’t want you. Is that clear?” “Very clear” said Odessa “But then, why did you call Odessa?” “Dewey look up and decided this had gone on long enough “Because that’s your name!!!!”

The man-servant walked in just then and seeing all three of them together said “OK guys……. what’s up?” Dewey said straight away ” I think we should go on an adventure and explore the field on the other side of the woods?” The man-servant looked very serious “Do you have any idea what is over there?” Dewey looked away a little “No.” “So…” the man-servant continued “who are the WE that are going on this adventure?” Dewey turned and looked right at him “Me, you, Jaxon and Odessa!” Odessa had not been listening because she needed to do a little under wing preening, but, upon hearing her name, she rotated her head as only an owl can and, confronting the man-servant, said “What?” The man-servant shook his head in despair “We didn’t call you Odessa.” “Well you should have” said Odessa “because that is my name.” Dewey looked at them and wondered how she became involved in them in the first place. She was their adventure companion!

Jaxon decided to get them organized and, after putting a few basic supplies into a bag, they started off through the barn’s big door and off across the first field. Dewey and Jaxon, because they were small, relied heavily on the man-servant and Odessa to take them in the right direction, and to watch for anything remotely dangerous! They soon made it across the field and into the woods where Odessa was constantly out of sight as she navigated around trees. Whereas Dewey and Jaxon could have been worried about getting lost in there, they just smiled at the nonsense going on between the man-servant and Odessa! “Odessa” he would call. “That’s my name” would say Odessa. “I know it’s your name!” said the man-servant. “Then what do you want?” replied Odessa. “I was making sure I knew where you were” said the man-servant “Well I’m here” said Odessa! “But I cannot see you ” said the man-servant. “That’s okay… I can see you” said Odessa. “That does not help me!” said the man-servant “And that is my problem how?” replied Odessa. This conversation repeated itself throughout the woods!

They eventually made it out of the woods and into the other field. It was full of huge sunflowers and they were all in bloom! Odessa flew over the tops of the flowers, while Dewey, Jaxon and the man-servant went in among the tall flowers. Not even the man-servant could see over the top of them and soon they were hopelessly lost. Jaxon had a brilliant idea, and called “Odessa!” There was no answer! “Odessa” he called again and a little louder. The only sound they heard was their own as they wandered around not knowing which direction they were going. All three of them shouted together “ODESSA! ODESSA!” but to no avail. Something had happened to Odessa, and they were lost.

Tuesday’s Thoughts!

Happy Tuesday! It is a VERY HAPPY Tuesday for me today! One of my most precious friends is coming to visit me.  Hoping the morning goes by fast until she gets here and  after that  wanting  time to go slow! There never is enough time when we are together. We didn’t know at the young age of 10 that we would be destined to be forever friends! What a RIDE it has been.We have had our adventures for sure! I may have been responsible for the Peeps one, which Charlene won’t say a Peep about. At least I wasn’t the one who almost drove into the creek!  You stuck by my side through all those doughnut runs you made with me, and not because I really wanted a doughnut 🙂 OH the list could go on, but that would make this post too long, so just hurry up and get here my dear friend.

Since my mind is on friendship, I figured why not have that be today’s theme. As I have said often, I am blessed by the bestest friends anyone could have! Here is to Friendship! Enjoy!

Okay this is truly the last one my friends. I saw it and just had to post it! 🙂 HAVE A GREAT DAY!!

A bonus for today. 2 songs were on my heart when thinking about friendship. This first is called The Extra Mile, isn’t that what friendship is all about? Going the extra mile for those you hold so dear.

This next song I know I shared in another post a while back, but its has become so special to me. It was sent to me by Charlene when I really needed it.  My prayer for you all is that you have friends and family that will lend you their wings when needed. Like one of my favorite lines from this song,  “If your wings are broken, borrow mine ’til yours can open.”

What is hiding?

The girl was scared and confused. She had been out walking, enjoying her  journey. She knew where she  was headed, and everything was going fine. Walking and enjoying the smell of the roses and the beauty of the flowers along the  way, she turned the corner. She turned the corner into a wall of fog!

Where was she? Where did the beauty of the flowers go? How could things change so quickly, all she had done was walk around the corner, or so she thought. Right now it appeared like she was miles away from where she had been. How would she get back on the right path again?

Questions flooded through her mind and she couldn’t answer them. All she knew was that she had to continue on. It was so hard to step into that fog, but she knew she had to step in, in order to get through. With faltering steps she went forward, into the fog.

Oh would the fog ever go away ? Sometimes it would seem like it was breaking up and she would see a little light and feel a sense of joy, only for it to close back up again. The days of smelling the roses and seeing the lovely flowers seemed so long ago.

Wait, what was that ahead? Did she see butterflies flying? What was that pleasant aroma drifting towards her, could it be coming from the roses? She picked up her pace and found to her joy that she was right! She had been on the right path all along. The flowers were still here, along with the butterflies. Some things had crowded in and messed up her view, but the sun did continue to shine. The sun broke through the fog, showing her  what had been hidden from her view. Her heart smiled, as she continued on.
