My friend Jodi made a suggestion that I post more about how I met my husband to be on New Year’s Eve, so let the fairy tale begin 🙂
“Woe is me”, I thought as the days and months went by and my Prince Charming failed to come. No one came bearing a glass slipper that my foot would fit. Then again, my foot is so small due to my short stature that it was no surprise. On a side note here, I wore decorative, lacy white slippers on my wedding day. Like ballet shoes. After searching high and low for my size of shoe that seemed the natural choice. My gown covered my feet anyway and it was very comfortable. Ok, back to the story.
I made a decision at last to forget about Prince Charmings and go on with life. There was still a lot of joy to be found in life without them! It was a couple months after that, that I got contacted by a very close , excited friend of mine. She got engaged and she wanted me to be in her wedding party! Yes, the wedding was 500 miles away in the land of Indiana, but please…… Well I promised I would do all I could to be there, for we had been through a lot in our HS years together and I wanted to celebrate with her. Her life story was about rising above life’s challenges. I was sure I could meet this challenge of distance.
I worked at a retirement home which means we worked on holidays. Her wedding was New Year’s Eve. Fortunately I had a wonderful boss and she agreed to me getting off work to go. Now I just needed to find an affordable flight, which happened much to her joy and mine. She informed me who my escort would be. That he was such a nice man and how she couldn’t wait for me to meet a decent guy. I smiled to myself and thought sure I will meet him and it will be a fun week-end but had no intention of him being my Prince Charming. Remember I had given Prince Charming up. He was lost in the woods!
The plane landed the day before , in time for the rehearsal dinner at a Italian restaurant. My friend met me at the airport and off we went. Entered the restaurant and my friend introduced me to the wedding party and my eyes landed on a very handsome guy with sparkling green eyes and a charming smile. I faintly heard her explain how this was Brad, my escort. We sat across from each other at the table and talking just came naturally. He asked me what I thought of Indiana. Now granted I had only arrived and had not seen much, besides rows of cornfields. My reply, “It’s beautiful!” I still shake my head when I remember that. Yeah, I was hooked! We had a evening of shared laughter, I found he was as witty as he was handsome.
The next day dawned bright, I was excited for my friend as the day had arrived! And perhaps I was a tad bit excited to see one particular groomsman again.
The wedding was beautiful and my heart burst with joy that my friend was getting such well deserved happiness in her life. When the reception was almost over Brad asked me if I wanted to come to a party he was going to. Given the fact that my dear friend had other plans for the evening, I thought why not.
We played Pool and I beat him so badly. Yeah, this is my story I can change things if I want right? 🙂 Hey the stick was about as big as me, so I had more of a disadvantage. We played cards and talked and talked and sometime through out that evening it hit me that this may just be the one. Forget the fact that I was leaving for Pa. the next morning, it could work, right? The night ended with a movie and ended too quickly for me. We said our goodbyes and that was that, as I went to bed with visions of fairy tales dancing in my head.
Almost missed the flight the next morning from being so tired, but when I arrived what should meet my eyes but Brad waiting for me at the airport with a bouquet of roses. OOPS, no that was in my dream from the night before. I mean hey that was how it happened in all those chick flick movies I watched.
Even tho he didn’t meet me at the airport, I flew home on Cloud 10, I literally was in the clouds! I informed my sister when I got home that I was in love 🙂 and my parents. They smiled, but I think had a more “we will wait and see” expression on their faces.
So what happened after that? Well I think it was January or February when my dear friend needed to make a trip out to Pa. to see her Grandfather. She and her husband asked Brad if he wanted to help them drive out. Aren’t they sly 🙂 Brad quickly said Yes, for he wanted to see me so badly; or just because he was a nice guy and would always lend a helping hand. It was going to be a quick trip. They would arrive on a Friday night and leave the next afternoon. I had the house to myself that week-end so told them there was plenty of room to spend the night at my place. I decided I would take the couch that night, but I didn’t need it, for I think I just got a hour or 2 of sleep perhaps. After my friend and her husband went to bed, Brad and I stayed in the family room and chatted. And we truly did chat! We talked about everything under the sun and as the sun started rising we realized how long we had been talking!!
From there the cards started coming and the phone calls. Then the visits, and as they say the rest is history.
It all ended Happily Ever After 🙂 OK, no life is not a fairy tale, its not like we have not gone through some hard things! But life is a journey, and you have a choice to take the road bumps and valleys as they come, knowing the mountain top times will come as well. A choice that knowing no matter what the journey brings, you are in it hand in hand and will walk into the sunset together!
